@static The best bits of science are so unbelievable you need science to convince yourself it's true 😂 😎

There is a lot of anxiety and energy put in to the project of defining fascism. It makes sense. Fascism is (nearly) universally understood to be negative, dangerous, intoxicating. Fascism is the bath salts of political philosophy. A drug terrifying not just because of its degrading effects on the body, but the horror of enacting out atrocities -- but being unable to recognize them as atrocities until sober.

A precise, sorting definition of fascism would be a powerful prophylactic. 1/

Seeing the #fosstodon posts reminded me of something:

"We studied open-source software communities because open-source software communities are an extreme example of gender inequity. Seventy percent of all the software that supports technology infrastructure is open source, which makes open-source software integral to the future of the tech workforce. Yet women make up only 9.8% of the people who contribute to open-source software projects.

In seeking answers to this retention problem of the tech industry, our research found that women’s negative experiences range from minor to severe harassment, sexism, discrimination and misogyny to explicit death threats. Their expertise is challenged, their contributions are not well-received and their roles are diminished. They face constant harassment and deal with normalized abuse, often hearing that “guys will be guys,” and they deal with isolation because they are often severely outnumbered by men."

Really enjoying this podcast about #broadband with @mmasnick and Gigi Sohn. But, it does truly anger me that the #telecom industry is so dirty. Thanks Gigi for keeping up the fight and working for an internet that works for us, not only for #ISP’s.

if you don‘t have @mmasnick’s Techdirt.com in your RSS reader, you miss a lot in term of critical and to-the-point analysis of internet-related politics. Like the canadian link tax mess.

This is huge. Four Motherboard journalists are striking out on their own after watching their employer collapse under the weight of its own mismanagement. The four individuals -- Joseph Cox, Jason Koebler, Emanuel Maiberg and Samantha Cole -- have been doing some of the most impactful and intrepid reporting at the intersections of tech, culture and policy. If you can afford it, please consider subscribing to support this promising new enterprise. Godspeed!

I've mentioned this but I'm gonna make a real post.

If you are setting up Windows 11, select "English (World)" as your language (English Europe also works), and you will have NONE of the third party bloatware installed.

No Candy Crush, no Netflix, just the first party apps

Please do share this info with anyone who may be setting up Windows soon

Starting our account in the Fediverse. We are a group of young scientists from Latin America aiming to promote networking, integrated science and soft skills.

Our main motivation is to understand and explain interactions within atmos-, bios-, cryos- and hydrosphere and how this knowledge can help us to solve the huge socio-environmental challenges we are facing.

#PhysicsFactlet
Does a chaotic system always behave chaotically?
Not really, as many chaotic systems have a subset of possible initial conditions that lead to a quasi-periodic motion.
As an example, below are two sets (black and orange) of 20 double pendula each, all with the same initial energy, and each group starting with very similar initial conditions.
The first group (black) spread out a little bit with time, but nearby initial conditions keeps evolving into nearby dynamics, which is typical of integrable systems.
On the other hand the pendula in the second group (orange) also starts with similar initial condition, but after a short transient evolve each very differently from each other, which is a mark of a chaotic system.

I've been posting about my family in Maui -- my aunt is Tamara Paltin and she was mentioned by Prof Kapuaʻala Sproat here, co-author of the exceptional article in the Guardian about the water crisis. She is working for and with her people every day. So proud of my incredible resilient courageous family.

Hawaiian voices are rising and we must hear.

Revisiting a book I read when I was a kid. Published in 1971, when computers could "make nearly a million additions every second" and presumably intended for young children, it has a surprising amount of detail - eg. on how instructions are encoded in a word.
