Yikes, nasty GitHub outage right now: most of my repos (and other repos I've checked from other people) are returning a 404 error for both logged-in and logged-out users, same with attempts to run "git push"

Just started showing up on their status page: githubstatus.com/

Our movement was born online and it grew thanks to the reach that Twitter afforded us.

But the Twitter we knew is largely gone. Today's dangerous cesspool of hate and disinformation is bad for progressive organizing, so we've decided to step back from "X." indivisibleteam.medium.com/wer

I've been thinking about the new Associated Press guidelines to avoid referring to #AI in ways that could imply humanness, sentience, or intent:

Don't say, "It WANTS you to enter more information," for example.

I've often used that kind of wording for computers in the past.

But more precise wording matters now because it's the first time we've widely had systems that could be mistaken for being human or having sentience, and it's important not to reinforce that idea.

Two days ago the space probe Lucy shot past the asteroid Dinkinesh... and found it has a satellite! Most of the apparent motion in this movie is caused by Lucy zipping by at 16,000 kilometers per hour.

Lucy is going on a grand tour of the asteroids:

On 3 December 2024 it will swing past the Earth again to get a gravity assist.

On 20 April 2025 it will visit Donaldjohanson, an asteroid in the inner belt that's part of a family created by a collision involving the asteroid Erigone 130 million years ago. Yes, some asteroids come in families!

On 12 August 2027 it will pass Eurybates, an asteroid sitting near Jupiter's Lagrange point L4. This is largest member of the only confirmed disruptive collisional family in the Trojan asteroids.

On 15 September 2027 it will swing by Polymele, another asteroid near Jupiter's L4 point. Its red color suggests surface is rich in organic compounds called "tholins", which also give the moon Titan its reddish haze.

On 18 April 2028 it will visit Leucus, yet another asteroid near Jupiter's L4 point. This is a D-type asteroid, very dark red.

On 11 November 2028 it will see Orus, still another asteroid near Jupiter's L4. This may be a binary asteroid.

Then, after a while, on 26 December 2030, it will swing by Earth again for another gravity assist! It will be the the first spacecraft to return to Earth from Jupiter's orbit.

On 2 March 2033, it will visit Patroclus–Menoetius, a binary asteroid near Jupiter's *other* Lagrange point, L5.

Then it will sail off into the night.... for an animation of its trajectory, read on!

@baldur Just a warning, it seems that LinkedIn is trying to figure out how to monetize stuff better and is starting to limit organic reach.

@0x0FFF I think there's some truth to that, with three caveats:
1. There may be communities that I generally trust but may not entirely trust their vigilance in vetting contributions from new devs.
2. There may be some small projects that use techniques I don't entirely understand. (This is especially relevant for anyone still learning a new language.)
3. In my view biggest danger is *thinking* you understand the code when you really don't, so in some sense that's the one I'm most interested in mitigating.

This post from reddit is pretty on-point:
A software tester walks into a bar.

Runs into a bar.

Crawls into a bar.

Dances into a bar.

Flies into a bar. Jumps into a bar.

And orders:

a beer.

2 beers.

0 beers.

99999999 beers.

a lizard in a beer glass.

-1 beer.

"qwertyuiop" beers.

Testing complete.

A real customer walks into the bar and asks where the bathroom is.

The bar goes up in flames. 3/n

@tyranodactyl@mastodon.social Yeah, I was thinking more like the latter than the former. Aside for the chroot jail, I'm curious what other sandboxing measures you might typically take.

@mathaetaes So take it to be implicit here that the intent is to mitigate the risk beyond whatever you can do by looking at the code. (Honestly, I think people overestimate their ability to spot malicious code.)

Hey FediScience people.

An important step in handing over ownership of this site to the community was taken yesterday.

We have officially founded the FediScience association. A big thanks to the 20 founding members who attended and managed to stay awake:)

We will now go through the process of registering and applying for charitable status and hopefully be a fully fledged registered association ("e.V." in Germany ) early next year.

More info about membership etc to follow in due course.

“AI has never had much of a reflexive critical practice, any more than any other technical field. Criticisms of the field, no matter how sophisticated and scholarly they might be, are certain to be met with the assertion that the author simply fails to understand a basic point.”
