Amazon Fire TVs have found a new and annoying way to slap you in the face with ads https://www.theverge.com/2023/12/1/23984444/amazon-fire-tv-autoplay-ads-on-startup?utm_content=bufferaa667&utm_medium=social&utm_source=bufferapp.com&utm_campaign=buffer
TRAPPIST-1 is one of the most exciting exoplanetary systems discovered, with seven Earth-sized worlds orbiting a sunlike star, three in the habitable zone. It was hoped that the second planet, 1c, would be similar to Venus, with a thick carbon dioxide atmosphere. But observations from JWST showed that it's airless, more like a super-mercury. A new paper suggests that powerful flares from the red dwarf star couldn't have stripped away its atmosphere.
We’re hiring a JavaScript developer to work on Zotero “translators” — the pieces of code that let people save metadata and files to their Zotero libraries from across the web with a single click.
This is an open-ended contract role that can scale up and down in hours based on availability and workload. If you like web scraping, APIs, data formats, and exploring sites in the browser devtools, send us an email!
NY Times has some great reporting here: Just as the administration of George W. Bush blew off warnings of the 9/11 attacks, Netanyahu's government blew off highly specific warnings a year ago about the Hamas plans.

Hello #Mastodon!
This is my first post on Mastodon. I am usually to be found on www.unmannedspaceflight.com but I will be sharing space-related images here as well.
LAST ASTRO 101 LECTURE of the semester is about to start gosh I'm so excited. Both to be done, and because it's delightfully overwhelming to fit all of astrobiology, the Fermi Paradox, and The Pale Blue Dot into one lecture.
Anyway, you should take a listen to Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot speech if you haven't listened to it in a while. Astronomy is a humbling experience. Enjoy.

In journalism, bad #news sells. As it goes: “If it bleeds, it leads.”
“Even if it seems distasteful, the link between negative news and profit is important to understand,” media historian Michael J. Socolow writes. And the assassination of JFK 60 years ago offers a case study.

I dig this as a start, but I'd also like a spoken note at the top AND bottom of the ad stating it was made with "AI," and a text note on EVERY INDIVIDUAL "AI" GENERATED IMAGE within the ad.

Many hospitals claimed that they were monitoring COVID levels and would reinstate mask mandates when COVID levels are high. Well, now we have official CDC data that shows that COVID levels are high in most of the country. Over to you, hospitals... #BringBackMasks

Dear #astrodon colleagues from Bonn - I'm giving a colloquium at the #MPIfR tomorrow, Tuesday 29th, at 14:00 on "Astronomy and climate crisis: are we part of the problem or part of the solution?".
Come by, say hello (also remind me if you are on the fediverse since my post-talk brain may not remember)!
Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
