This seems like a pretty good statement regarding Threads from @Gargron https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2023/07/what-to-know-about-threads/
Remember all those weird fungal diseases people were dying of last year (like Julie Powell, the wonderful author of Julie & Julia)? That COVID-aware people said were likely from #COVID-damaged immune systems?
The Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota shared this study last month showing that the rise in hospitalizations for fungal infections...was driven by COVID19-associated fungal infections.
Here’s my big announcement!
As a human rights lawyer, I’ve spent my career supporting DV survivors, asylum seekers, and demanding economic, social, and climate justice.
I’m running for U.S. Congress in the district I grew up in because these crises are getting worse—and justice can’t wait.

We need to stop worrying about that Meta is going to do, and worry a lot more about what we want to do. If we build the fedinet thoughtfully, Meta's vast userbase could be a major asset to a speedy effort to globalize decentralized social networks. #FutureOverFeatures
I just wrote a feature about sonification, which uses sound to help make data accessible to blind/visually impaired users. This is an important type of freedom: giving more people the power to participate in science & pursue their passions. https://www.technologyreview.com/2023/06/19/1074049/universe-sonification/ #freedom #july4th
Alternative headline: "We just had one of the coolest July 4ths of the rest of your life."
This July 4 was hot. Earth’s hottest day on record, in fact.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2023/07/05/hottest-day-ever-recorded/
On the #4thofJuly, a US senator tweeted a fake quote from one of America’s founding patriots. https://fakehistory.wordpress.com/2009/06/14/fake-quotations-patrick-henry-on-religionists/
I am sorry to those who came over here with me in November in the hope and expectation that a good chunk of legal Twitter would also come.
Sadly most of the accounts I recommended as they came over then are now fairly quiet on here - many not having posted since December/January.
Am looking out for other legal accounts to recommend - and if you know of any, do let me know.
Any area of law, any jurisdiction.
Oh! That reminds me to share something I’ve found super useful at work. If you’re in a situation where a team’s docs are in markdown spread across a bunch of git repos and you want a unified, searchable interface: mkdocs is your friend.
In a new git repo I add all the repos I want in the unified docs as git submodules. Them I use mkdocs to generate unified docs that I render with GH pages.
Doesn’t interfere with original docs at all.
I'm SUPER EXCITED to share with you this series of quantum physics explainer videos I produced with the Perimeter Institute! Check out Episode 1: Wave Particle Duality now ➡️ https://youtu.be/DfQH3o6dKss Subscribe the channel to catch each episode as it’s released! #Quantum101
Is anyone here yet? I wrote a cool thing about why vertical farms don’t work but also why we so desperately need something like vertical farms. https://www.canarymedia.com/articles/food-and-farms/why-vertical-farming-just-doesnt-work
I hate to be a debbie-downer, but the idea that decentralization increases resilience is just wrong, wishful thinking. Shit happens. Stuff decays. Monopolies fuck around with things, individuals fuck around with things.
Institutions create resilience. We like to fantasize that it's otherwise, play around with anarchist/libertarian ideas, but it's the luxury given to us by the simplicity and resilience of the institutionally-strong context in which we live.
@bflipp there's a good article by @tchambers that has a well thought out and reasoned approach that also suggests avoiding a knee-jerk reaction.
I feel like #Threads would be much better served being used as an on-ramp to the Fediverse for normies and we should be providing ample resources to migrate them out of #Meta ASAP instead of preemptively blocking Threads completely. People on #Mastodon seem overly skittish and reactionary when we can use Threads to poison pill all of Facebook.
I know most of y'all aren't reading anything this week at all, let alone today, but there's a really great article by Bryn Nelson out in the Journal Cancer Cytopathology on the problems of using "A.I." in medicine: https://acsjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/cncy.22739.
It was fantastic to talk to Dr Nelson about this, and he honestly did fantastic work covering this very important topic.
(And if you're interested in more of what I, specifically, had to say, here, also keep a look out for the upcoming July-August issue of American Scientist.)
We're looking for a technical student to join our data management group at CERN, Geneva (12 months placement, paid, holidays, health insurance, flexible start date). You must be CERN member state national, should be between bachelor's & master's in your studies, have good experience with Linux, Python, git, and have a general idea about networks, databases, and storage. There's also the possibility to do a master's thesis as part of the programme. Please contact me directly if interested!
Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
