Today was, btw, the first time someone said hello to me at a conference because they met me on mastodon
💜
(Also met multiple ppl I knew or who knew me from twitter - the professional #astrodon community is still stronger there, but hey, we are building something new here...)
Cherry on top: Arkham's referral links for this service are just Base64-encoded email addresses, meaning anonymous crypto people who are sharing the referral links have inadvertently revealed email addresses they didn't realize would be linked to them.
You may have heard that climate change is contributing to a global #sriracha shortage and we're here to tell you that's completely true:

@brooklynmarie Pasadena, San Marino and Beverly Hills have been targeted as well. So disgusting. https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2022-10-06/antisemitic-fliers-los-angeles-yom-kippur-jewish-holiday
Facebook reportedly turned over chat messages between mother and daughter, leading to charges of abortion-related felonies. You all think you'll be able to just go to another state or Canada, but don't be so sure. Your phone knows everything, and tech will snitch.

This has gotten weirdly popular. If you're interested in more science takes by me, I have a new book on the science/politics/ethics of space settlement: http://www.acityonmars.com/
The number of new Mastodon users has now slowed to a trickle again - but the number of active users keeps hitting new all-time-highs. IMO this is way more important.
Thank you for being here

Academics who post submitted papers to arXiv: which license do you select and why do you use that one? Have you ever had an issue with the journal you submitted to regarding the arXiv license?

Oh my god, the #Dutch #government has launched a mastodon server! Welcome to the fediverse!
A new study shows that multiple rapid antigen tests are needed to reliably detect COVID-19.
During the first week of infection, a single test has 82.5% sensitivity in symptomatic cases and only 34.4% in asymptomatic cases, compared to a PCR test. 🧵

However, the term “black hole" appeared in print well before that.
Journalist and science writer Ann E. Ewing reported on "Black Holes in Space" in January of 1964, after attending an AAAS meeting in Cleveland. She did not attribute the term to anyone in particular.
Physicist Hong-Yee Chiu claimed that Robert Dicke used the term “black hole” as early as 1960 or 1961. But as far as documented use in print, Ann Ewing in 1964 is the earliest example I know of.

Physicist John Archibald Wheeler was born #OTD in 1911.
A titan of 20th century science, Wheeler introduced the S-Matrix; developed the first general theory of fission with Neils Bohr; coined many terms (”worm hole” and “it from bit”) and popularized others (“black hole”); and trained Feynman, Everett, Thorne, and a host of others.
Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
