We now have the following national governments with a Mastodon server:

- Germany: social.bund.de
- The Netherlands: social.overheid.nl
- Switzerland: social.admin.ch

As well as the EU with
- social.network.europa.ec

Let's hope that other countries will follow this design pattern, and all launch a fediverse server at social.[governmentwebsite].[TLD]. Following this pattern makes it immediately clear to people they are communicating with an official government account.

A tireless activist for justice.

She was killed by a Russian ballistic missile – one of countless attacks against innocent civilians.

She was the victim of a Russian war crime.

Security "experts" don't want to hear this: But forcing people to log in more often does, in fact, increase the likelihood that:

- Someone will shouldersurf your password
- People will find shortcuts to make logging in more convenient
- People will chose passwords that are least annoying to them irrespective to how secure it is
- Phishing attacks are more successful

I’m assuming that the reason why every goddamn tech commentator in the world is currently pretending that nobody in the world owns USB-C cables—“OMG! Apple is going to sell so many dongles”—when in reality anybody even remotely likely to buy a new iPhone almost certainly has a bunch of them lying around…

…is down to either the usual Apple Reality Distortion Field or are suffering from the usual tech punditry brain damage

Relax. Even my parents have more USB-C cables than lightning.

Now I’m imagining Saint Peter holding up his copy of Lipschutz as I approach the pearly gates, while I think “oh, no!”

To share with friends who moved from #Twitter to #Threads:

"#Meta acknowledged…to The Washington Post that Threads is intentionally blocking the search terms ["covid" and "long covid"] and said that other terms are being blocked, but the company declined to provide a list of them. A search by The Post discovered that the words…“coronavirus,” “vaccines” and “vaccination” are also among blocked words."

It wouldn't be #Apple if there weren't some passive resistance to regulation. Or artificial technical limitations in service to product differentiation.

#Apple's #VirtueSignalling about #Envoirmentalism falls complete on it's face when they purposefully design their products to be #unrepairable and inevitably fail over time!

#Repairability, #UseLonger and #Upsycling are inherently better than anything else!

Big, wonky win for #FairUse in US #copyright:

cadc.uscourts.gov/internet/opi

TLDR: If a tech standard becomes part of a legal standard, you can share it freely online without fear of liability for infringement.

“Many private organizations develop and copyright suggested technical standards ... We hold that the non-commercial dissemination of such standards, as incorporated by reference into law, constitutes fair use and thus cannot support liability for copyright infringement.

An update to my previous story of two "honesty" researchers whose studies used fraudulent data: one of them has a new TV show on NBC & the other one is suing the data analysts who caught her.

For context, the CDC used to recommend universal masking whenever coronavirus levels were at substantial or high. Currently 91% of wastewater sites in New York are at high, so previously the CDC would recommend masking for the vast majority of the state.

So pleased to have finished reading Greg Egan's _Scale_ (and the accompanying essay on the author's website, naturally). I'm very happy to add another of his novels to my collection.

There's something about the combination of imagination and just enough (okay, maybe sometimes more than enough) grounding in hard science that appeals. Kudos.

Next week, #NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies turns 60, and we are celebrating our anniversary with some retrospective talks on our history… and forward thinking talks about our future.

I have been appointed to present “History and Future of #Climate Modeling”, so I’ve been interviewing many GISS alumni.

The back-stories to the published development are fascinating.

I’ve asked my boss to get a film maker to document these oral histories better. It would make a great documentary imho.
