Due to the new EU Digital Service Act (DSA), Twitter had to disclose the number of its staff working on content moderation issues (2294) and their language skills.
It is even worse than what was expected.
We have far more admin/moderator distributed across the fedi, than they have with far fewer users to keep safe.
@JonathanAldrich @b_cavello The American Astronomical Society has had all six of its journals be open-access since last year: https://journals.aas.org/ .
But it has about a tenth of the membership ACM does.
Surprising fact: no major professional scientific organization has flipped from a paywalled publishing model to 100% Open Access.
The @ACM the world's foremost professional computing organization, is going to be the first on January 1, 2026, when its entire digital library will become freely available to the public.
@jwstfeed Hi. I saw your tweet on The Other Place about the JWST observations of HH212 scheduled for Monday.
You made a comment about the data being under proprietary period for 12 months, which is true & I stand by the need for proprietary periods for data coming from such a competitively-allocated telescope.
But the good news is, this will be our second epoch of HH212 observations & we released an image from last year’s today: https://mastodon.social/@markmccaughrean/111351682053468368

Maybe custodial sentences for financial crimes should be in terms of minimum wage? So if you defraud, say, $1Bn and the minimum wage is $7.25, that's 137,931,034 hours in prison, or around 15,734 years. That's obviously excessive. Let's say an 9 hour work day with a generous hour unpaid for lunch. So only 5,244 years in prison per $1Bn fraud?
Hi K-9 Mail community! This is a reminder that we'll be retiring this account next month, when K-9 Mail transforms into #Thunderbird for #Android.
So please go follow @thunderbird to stay in touch and get future updates. Thanks for being on this journey with us!
(YES, Thunderbird for Android will be on @fdroidorg)
If you missed the news, here's the original announcement: https://blog.thunderbird.net/2022/06/revealed-thunderbird-on-android-plans-k9/
And here's where to find our monthly development updates: https://blog.thunderbird.net/category/thunderbird-mobile/
Yikes, nasty GitHub outage right now: most of my repos (and other repos I've checked from other people) are returning a 404 error for both logged-in and logged-out users, same with attempts to run "git push"
Just started showing up on their status page: https://www.githubstatus.com/

Our movement was born online and it grew thanks to the reach that Twitter afforded us.
But the Twitter we knew is largely gone. Today's dangerous cesspool of hate and disinformation is bad for progressive organizing, so we've decided to step back from "X." https://indivisibleteam.medium.com/were-stepping-back-from-the-increasingly-dangerous-and-dysfunctional-x-and-we-re-sorry-it-s-a15524fab070
I've been thinking about the new Associated Press guidelines to avoid referring to #AI in ways that could imply humanness, sentience, or intent:
Don't say, "It WANTS you to enter more information," for example.
I've often used that kind of wording for computers in the past.
But more precise wording matters now because it's the first time we've widely had systems that could be mistaken for being human or having sentience, and it's important not to reinforce that idea.
🤗 Congrats to Dr. Agne Semenaite for successfully defending her thesis "Cosmological Implications of Galaxy Clustering in BOSS and eBOSS"! Next, she and her fantastic frenchpress-PhD-hat ☕🎓will move to #Swinburne University in Melbourne. All the best for your next chapter, Agne!
Two days ago the space probe Lucy shot past the asteroid Dinkinesh... and found it has a satellite! Most of the apparent motion in this movie is caused by Lucy zipping by at 16,000 kilometers per hour.
Lucy is going on a grand tour of the asteroids:
On 3 December 2024 it will swing past the Earth again to get a gravity assist.
On 20 April 2025 it will visit Donaldjohanson, an asteroid in the inner belt that's part of a family created by a collision involving the asteroid Erigone 130 million years ago. Yes, some asteroids come in families!
On 12 August 2027 it will pass Eurybates, an asteroid sitting near Jupiter's Lagrange point L4. This is largest member of the only confirmed disruptive collisional family in the Trojan asteroids.
On 15 September 2027 it will swing by Polymele, another asteroid near Jupiter's L4 point. Its red color suggests surface is rich in organic compounds called "tholins", which also give the moon Titan its reddish haze.
On 18 April 2028 it will visit Leucus, yet another asteroid near Jupiter's L4 point. This is a D-type asteroid, very dark red.
On 11 November 2028 it will see Orus, still another asteroid near Jupiter's L4. This may be a binary asteroid.
Then, after a while, on 26 December 2030, it will swing by Earth again for another gravity assist! It will be the the first spacecraft to return to Earth from Jupiter's orbit.
On 2 March 2033, it will visit Patroclus–Menoetius, a binary asteroid near Jupiter's *other* Lagrange point, L5.
Then it will sail off into the night.... for an animation of its trajectory, read on!

@baldur Just a warning, it seems that LinkedIn is trying to figure out how to monetize stuff better and is starting to limit organic reach.
This post from reddit is pretty on-point:
A software tester walks into a bar.
Runs into a bar.
Crawls into a bar.
Dances into a bar.
Flies into a bar. Jumps into a bar.
And orders:
a beer.
2 beers.
0 beers.
99999999 beers.
a lizard in a beer glass.
-1 beer.
"qwertyuiop" beers.
Testing complete.
A real customer walks into the bar and asks where the bathroom is.
The bar goes up in flames. 3/n

Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
