I genuinely believe that at this point all academic conferences should at least have a strong hybrid (online & offline) option—even when we aren’t in the middle of another COVID wave.

It makes the conference much more accessible.

So funny when cogsci guys who TA'd stats a few times graduate and join a health startup and all become "behavioral economists of futuring foresight" or whatever title they're on now

@georgetakei this is a good piece on the subject. The author found that even many people features in stories like these eventually landed on their feet. That doesn’t make the college okay — there are lots of aspects of the system we need to fix. But the data doesn’t support the idea of it all being a scam. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/

Is there anything more delightful than remembering you get to create a new reference entry because you not only made the point that you now need to make in a new piece of work but backed it up in a large study 🥰

We've published over 60k words of openly shared original empirical research projects this year -- that's a book!

Here's an old pic I took of the snow-capped Llullaillaco #volcano, as seen at #sunset from ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile. The volcano itself sits at the border between #Chile and #Argentina. I love the colour contrast between the ochre expanse of the Atacama #Desert and the white #snow covering the volcano!

Deidre asked me to "toot on the Mastodons" that we just did another episode, this time talking to Jon Millican and Timothy Buck about default-E2EE messaging across all Meta/Fb properties --- the largest E2EE deployment on Earth. Fun chat! I had at least one good question!

Making friends in abandoned places is the best. I met this sweet little cat in the ghost village of Gherdeal in Romania - thankfully, even though the town was mostly deserted at the time, he did have a human to look after him 🥰

“Diane Duane on Tumblr”

"“Can you add AI to the hydraulics system?”"

We’re in the middle of a massive bubble and this is only a fraction of the ridiculousness it’ll reach before it pops, and all of you who are using generative models have a hand in inflating it tumblr.com/dduane/737900044438

Mass General Brigham, the largest health system in MA, is reinstating masking requirements on Jan 2.

It joins Boston Medical Center, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Beth Israel Lahey Health & other MA hospitals.

Why was this not done weeks ago at the *start* of the COVID surge?

Today's story caps months worth of work with colleagues on a Washington Post series about critical changes in India's public governance through its domination of technology.
This piece delves into what happened before and after Apple warned journalists and politicians in India Oct. 30 that a country was attacking their phones.
What we found: The evidence suggests that India is using Pegasus again, and again going after its critics in civil society.
More surprising, and a clear sign of what the current Indian government expects from major tech companies: Ministers went on the attack against Apple, which sees India as a major market for growth.

I just wanna thank @pluralistic and the reprise of his interview on the CBC for making me realize that the whole push to address "junk fees" is just yet another case of governments attacking the symptoms of a market structural failures rather than the cause: consolidation/lack of competition allowing companies to take advantage of their customers. It's a token gesture, a policy flailing because they refuse to do the long and hard work of fixing these markets. #economics
