The OpenSSH project has announced plans to remove support for DSA keys.
OpenSSH has disabled DSA keys by default since 2015 but has retained optional support.
A full DSA removal is planned for January 2025.

@pluralistic Being one of Chamberlain's many enshittification victims, I bought a "ratgdo" (Rage Against The Garage Door Opener), a small $30 circuit that hooks to a Chamberlain-brand garage door opener and lets me control it locally with #HomeAssistant. I then disconnected my opener from the official MyQ site and deleted their app.
It's a small victory, but I savored it.
Chinese authorities are clamping down on free speech by exploiting an AirDrop weakness Apple has known about for 5 years (at least).
Huh, now that's a first one here... Mastodon tells me there are two replies to my last "about today" post, but I can't see them. Neither logged in nor logged out, neither in online interface nor using elk.
Someone posting using "followers only" with me not following them (but would it include also me if I were tagged)? Something else? 🤔

My thinking on democracy what must happen to save democracy has evolved.
Fact: The United States has been a backsliding demoracy for some time.
Fact: We are in an information disruption.
Because democracy requires facts and an educated population, the question is whether enough people will develop the media literacy needed in this new age of information quickly enough.
"Most garage-door opener brands are actually Chamberlain, including "LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Merlin, and Grifco"" I haven't lived in a place with a garage door for about 25 years, but even without the new rate of enshittification-by-app, this is obviously a huge lapse in enforcement. @pluralistic is always clear as day on these things.
Hurrah! My copy of Kelly and @ZachWeinersmith 's new book just arrived in our far shores. Looking forward to getting stuck in.

🥵 🔥
I think it’s likely 2023 was the hottest year since the mid Pleistocene transition or perhaps since Greenland had its current size, even earlier— but Gavin says that’s an announcement for another day. (And we are working on demonstrating that… but scientists tend to be conservative.) probably that announcement will happen in 2024 barring any crazy volcanoes.

Let me rewrite this for you Jason. “I, as CEO, made a major strategic error, taking the decision to increase headcount too rapidly. I take personal responsibility for the decision I made, and am working with the board to appoint new leadership.”

#Pulsars are magnetized, rotating neutron stars. Beams of radiation from their magnetic poles swipe past the observer, resulting in characteristic pulsing radio patterns.
The fastest pulsar we know, PSR J1748−2446ad, rotates at 716 times/sec or 43000 times/min.
You can listen to some of the pulsars here - the intensity of the radio waves as the amplitude of the audio:

Not the 715 Hz one, but the 173.7 Hz (careful, annoying sound!)
Someone on LinkedIn pointed out that #OpenAI doesn’t use an LLM for their support chat, but has instead opted to use some extremely limited decision tree. Which is both understandable, telling, and fucking hilarious.
Cory Doctorow @pluralistic is kickstarting the audiobook for The Bezzle, the sequel to last year's Red Team Blues.
There are all kinds of reasons to support this project. Starting with the obvious: Doctorow's novels are always good SF, and the audiobooks are always top notch. But too-also, he's showing the way that indies can thrive outside of the Amazon monopoly. This benefits all of us.
This is the northern rose window from Notre-Dame de Paris. I was there not that long before the fire. Amazingly, it seems as though all the stained glass in this photo actually survived the conflagration. This window was originally made in about 1250, and most of the original glass is still in place.

@delawen Fun Fact: https://startrek.website is part of the federation.
Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
