here's the thing: you might not like #threads, but it still could go a long way to wean people off of #twitter permanently in a way that #mastodon unfortunately doesn't / didn't (and, vicariously, pulling 'em into the greater #fediverse). #socialmedia #community
I cannot see the launch of Instagram’s Threads as anything but a huge win for ActivityPub and the Fediverse. Millions of people now have an easy way to join and skip the headaches of server choice etc. This is GREAT, and furthermore, does not diminish what makes Mastodon great. More of my friends will be here soon. The insular “do not play nice” mentality of hardcore Fediverse advocates just does not appeal to me at all.
Threads, Meta's Twitter clone, starts countdown, plus new details

I have a recommendation. First, make sure you are following your server's Admin. Then, I recommend that you follow some of the admins of servers other than your own, especially the larger ones. Set them on notifications. This will keep you in the loop on what is happening across the Fediverse.

RT @Streetsblog Transportation officials across the US like to pretend that "induced demand" doesn't exist—but Americans know better, and they want better transportation options for their communities, a new study finds.
It’s happened. Our department has lost a young faculty member to a better offer in a safer state.
Texas’s extremist government will end up wrecking the universities here. Given a choice, people don’t want to subject themselves to fascism.

Reddit has now sufficiently broken their own site that moderators of the blind community's subreddit who are themselves blind can no longer access the moderator tools.
This statement by the mod team is worth a read to understand the full extent of the failure.

2006 - 2022: Corporate content hosts are so cheap and easy that no one has an incentive to learn to self-host content, and people who were previously self-hosting content move over to big "social" platforms
2022 - … : Platforms close off in every imaginable way and start taking every opportunity to extract rents from users, benefits that originally got people to move over now gone, but the network effects are such you can no longer switch to open alternatives or convince other people to do so
The FCC is accepting applications for new, low-power, community radio stations the first week of November.
This is huge, you guys, this window rarely opens (the last time was 2013), and as you know, KUZU shows one way LPFM can be a foundation to build valuable community information resources.
The Grassroots Radio folks are holding a conference in West Virginia to help folks out with this.
Please boost and share.

@godlessmom Lists are powerful. They are the only way to ensure you don’t miss posts from the people or hashtags that interest you. If you use the web interface in ‘advanced’ mode (which I wholeheartedly recommend for tablets, laptops and desktop PCs) you can ‘pin’ lists, too.
Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
