Even I, for as COVID-cautious as I've been, have gotten pretty lax about outdoor events. A new study from China suggests we should be more careful. Three infected people attended a crowded night market, and they infected at least 131 other people. The market was crowded and there was little wind. Researchers found #COVID19 aerosols released by patients could suspend in ambient air up to 1 h 39 min and still be contagious. https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpubh.2023.1153303/full
I find it very difficult to find good information about the effects of ambient UVA, UVB, because most studies point to UVC as the most effective for disinfection/sterilization and disregard effects on transmissibility.
There are number of studies that have identified an inverse correlation between the UV Index and Covid morbidity and mortality in the following time periods. The mechanisms posited include direct effects and increased vitamin D production.
To protest a #PrideMonth display at their local public #library, right-wing activists thought it would be smart to check out all the featured books and threaten to keep them until the library promised to remove them from its collection.
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/22/us/pride-books-library-protest.html
It backfired. Citizens gave $15k and the city gave $30k to replace the books and expand the collection.
I don't get it. There's already an http://x.company It was fun working at that one.
Possibly the most remarkable organizational phenomenon that the internet has produced is #Wikipedia. Its much more impressive to me than Google or the social media sites. But it never really gets mentioned in the conversation of the greatest internet corporations, presumably because it doesn't make money and has no intention of doing so. It has so many issues but not as many as most internet titans and the fact of its sustained existence is remarkable.
No, the ethically challenged billionaire who just shuttered Santa Barbara's newspaper, leaving massive debts for bankruptcy judges to sort out, did not "run out of money." https://www.noozhawk.com/santa-barbara-news-press-staff-told-all-jobs-eliminated-as-newspaper-stopped-publishing/
In 2000, Elon Musk tried to rebrand PayPal as X.com, but was forced out by the board and replaced as CEO by Peter Thiel.
Now he’s doing the same to Twitter, but is surrounded by sycophants who can’t tell him it’s a bad idea.

* Isopods have 7 pairs of legs all pretty much the same length.
* 74** logic gates have ... 7 pairs of legs all the same length!
Coincidence? I think not!
Clearly, each isopod contains 4 logic gates. This Armadillidium vulgare has 4 AND gates. Don't forget to connect power & ground legs & use pull-down resistors on inputs.
(best practice is to simply ask the rollie to position itself in your circuit.)
Like most natural systems. they use micro-voltages, don't use standard 5V power sources.
For quite some time, I have linked TypeTopology files (articles?) from expository discussions here.
Now I have started to do the opposite, closing a circle. I am adding links from TypeTopology to the discussions here.
I encourange TypeTopology contributors to do the same from now on.
The idea is that people here can learn what we are doing in TypeTopology, and conversely, readers of TypeTopology can benefit from the discussions here.
Google is trying to put the web in a cage in the same way they put your devices in a cage (Android, ChromeOS).
There’s one really easy, simple and efficient way to fight them: uninstall Chrome/Chromium, use #firefox
Do it. Now.
– But I prefer Chrome because of…
If you are not ready to sacrifice a little comfort (so little, Firefox is great) to save the web, then you don’t deserve a free web anyway. You are part of those killing it.
Remove Chrome. Install Firefox.

To anyone wondering when “I have an important exam tomorrow & I haven’t revised!” nightmares go away?
Possibly never 🤷♂️
It has been more than 40 years since my last university exam and yet last night … 😱
(Possibly brought on in sympathy for our daughter who’s trying to finish the first draft of her masters thesis this weekend while her collaborators do f* all. At my old university.
And BTW, it’s asinine to insist on group work theses & with all groups working on the same mandatory topic 🤬)
The Tilings Encyclopaedia is wonderful. Comprehensive, nicely illustrated, clearly explained. https://tilings.math.uni-bielefeld.de/
I believed Russia would not destroy historic Odesa, because of the city's significance to the Russian empire. But I was wrong - now it seems they know they will never control it again, so they are happy to see it burn.

The median price for existing single-family homes reached $416,000 in June. That's basically the same price that a newly built house was selling for in May. https://t.co/5d3V3wVRPn
Why we think every scholarly organization, but in particular scholarly societies, should not just migrate to #Mastodon, but host their own instances - and what that has to do with the journals many scholarly societies use to generate revenue:
She championed #womenInSTEM writing, “I live and work under 3 basic assumptions. 1: There is no problem in science that can be solved by a man that cannot be solved by a woman. 2: Worldwide, half of all brains are in women. 3: We all need permission to do science, but, for reasons that are deeply ingrained in history, this permission is more often given to men than to women.”

Compare #paychecks with you co-workers. It is the best way to get #equality.
In the #USA it is illegal for them to even ASK you not to talk about your #wages
Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
