@joshuagrochow @academicchatter Mastodon is based on an open standard, with many available implementations. The network and protocol are not owned by anyone.

With bluesky we have only a promise that it will be like this in the future.

It seems like Mastodon is losing its mindshare to #Bluesky among many academics.

I can't help but think this has to do with the self-imposed limitations of Mastdon — lack of quotes, ordered timeline, etc. Makes it less interesting to use, for no real advantage.

Sad, because the underlying decentralization is much more robust.

Reminder that the Emergency/Presidential Alert everyone in the US got today is easy to spoof because it's part of an unauthenticated cellular broadcast your phone will trust no matter who it comes from.

Here's the paper that details the attack, "This is Your President Speaking: Spoofing Alerts in 4G LTE Networks": par.nsf.gov/servlets/purl/1015

Also malicious parties *have* begun taking advantage of this, see the recent attempts at disrupting the federal elections in the Philippines via fake emergency alerts.

Heya folks, if you're interested, my wonderful wife Olivia is going to be doing a 50 mile charity bikeathon for the Adaptive Sports Foundation, a nonprofit that supports individuals with cognitive and physical disabilities, chronic illnesses, and wounded veterans. I realize there are a lot of charities out there but this is a really good org that does amazing work giving people life-changing experiences and creating community. If you'd like to donate here's the link:

For #WorldAnimalDay the oldest known sculpture of a horse: the tiny (4.8 cm) but absolutely gorgeous #IceAge masterpiece was found in the Vogelherd cave on the Swabian Jura - carved in a mammoth ivory some 40,000 years ago!

Since 2017, more than 132 countries have experienced significant protests. If you’ve attended a protest, there’s a good chance the local police have collected data about you without you knowing.

Recently, we have seen how live facial recognition technology, which matches images captured by cameras against facial images held in databases, is being used to police more and more public events, particularly protest.

Holy shit, the day after I did a comic about Ronald McDonald crying blood for mcrib they're bringing it back?

What else would you like me to do with this power?

After getting my booster yesterday I was wondering if working out would increase my chances of side effects. Not only does it not, but 90 minutes of post-vax exercise might boost your immune system. Cool! ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/search/resear

5 years ago today, journalist Jamal #Khashoggi walked into the #Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Saudi agents murdered him there and hacked his body to pieces.

In 2021, US intelligence concluded Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman himself had approved the operation.

You need to bring everyone along. An example of doing it right:

When Spain closed down their last coal mines in 2018, they spent €250 million on :

- early retirement for miners over the age of 48,
- restorative environmental measures in coal communities
- retrain coal miners to begin working with safer, more modern green technologies."

These mines were closed without a fight. (I mean, did you even hear about the closures?)

@simon in the 1920s city engineers already understood induced demand and the inefficiency and inequity of dedicating scarce urban public space to storing private automobiles. There were mass campaigns against giving the streets over to the "murder machines" that disproportionately killed children. Some major cities almost passed laws requiring speed governors that would limit cars to 20mph.

Hi all. I'm running out of funds for the Galaxy Map project and may have made my last map.

One thing that could save the project is if I could get a job in scientific visualization or virtual reality.

I even have a prototype virtual starship that I can give tours on so people can check out my Unity coding skills!

Does anyone have job leads or suggestions?
