(Disclaimer: I don't even have a blog)

Imagine somebody who has a free personal blog and no artistic aptitude or money, who wants to illustrate her posts with something, but can't find a free image that fits. What kind of image should she use?

Canadian political cartoonist, Michael deAdder has requested that his Washington Post cartoons be widely circulated after his recent dismissal.

This is what I see in the Tesla logo, and cannot unsee:

March 6th is an important date for the Digital Markets Act (DMA). By that time Big Tech has to comply with the regulation.

One part of the regulation is the choice screen. The choice screen shows user a choice of browsers when setting up the device and allows them to select which one they want to use.

We attended a meeting where we gave feedback on how the choice screen should work for it to be effective. We said it was important that the order of choice screen browsers would be random and that there should be a full visible description. Google´s mockups gave priority to Big Tech, by always having them in the top 5 positions and only shows logo and name, meaning brand recognition is everything.

We also made the point that the default browser should have its icon on the front screen in the prime position, so it is easily found.

My question to you is this: Do you think Google will implement an effective or ineffective choice screen?

From 2015 to 2022, I spent hundreds of hours on Duolingo, translating articles, answering language questions on the forums, and helping to improve the smaller courses by reporting mistakes.

There are thousands of volunteers who donated their labour to Duo: the course creators who wrote their courses, the volunteers who created grammar guides (some smaller languages had an entire second course in the forums), the wiki contributors, the native speakers who answered questions in the sentence discussions.

All of their work made Duolingo the powerhouse it is today. Duo was built by a community who believed in its original mission: language learning should be free and accessible.

Bit by bit all of our work was hidden from us as Duolingo became a publicly-traded company. And now that work is being fed into their AI as training data.

Well, I've learned the true lesson of Duolingo: never give a corporation your labour for free. Don't ever trust them, no matter what they say. Eventually greed will consume any good intentions.

I switched to Firefox a few weeks ago and it was remarkably painless for something absolutely critical that I need to work reliably, with zero additional friction, every single day.
I cannot stress how low-hassle it is to switch from Chrome to a browser with a business model that doesn't rely on tracking you.
Do it.

Thank you TODAY for covering the current COVID surge. I really appreciate that so many are sharing the COVID wastewater charts! It shows that, contrary to the cynical narrative of "pandemic fatigue," many still care and want to know the data so they can protect their communities.

say NO to 2024! no more years! #EndDates

• every year is worse than the last
• "being on time" is neuronormative and ableist
• date/time math is inconsistent and annoying
• "number goes up" is unsustainable
• "see you in a bit" is just fine
• nobody ever knows what day it is so let's just stop pretending
• buses don't run on "time", they show up when you light a cigarette
• deadlines were invented by capitalists
• global south forced to winter during summer
• time is an illusion and calendar isn't real - we made it up!

we can do better!

A few folks who recently joined as FSF associate members have cited, of their reason for joining, "A post on Mastodon." Well, well, well, that's a great reason, indeed. If half of your CSS is overriding things on the other half, you are doing it wrong. If you need to look at five selectors to know a button's colour, your code is a real mess.
