@trinsec Indeed, I have not, but thanks for the context! Maybe I can have my mom make me a cute hat too! ...Though it would probably be at least a hundred bucks in yarn because of my massive dome 😂

@trinsec I'm not sure what that is, but if it's a GI Jane joke, be wary of any Will Smiths you see in your general vicinity or you may get the Chris Rock treatment 😂

@barefootstache Hmm, have you tried Darjeeling tea? It's one of my favorite to have without adulterants outside of oolong. Otherwise, I find most black teas require milk/sugar/etc, as they're quite bitter.

And thanks for the link, I'll take a look! 😄

@trinsec I actually already got a cool aviator/bomber hat, but it was before I axed the hair, lol.

I'm thinking of finding a cool newsboy cap, and maybe a few others, but my head is massive (I have an XXL hat size), so finding hats that fit but aren't stretchy is hard, and I'm not a huge fan of beanies 😂

So I just shaved my head due to stress (and eventually covid) induced alopecia. Literally lost nearly 30% of my heads surface area of hair within the last 6 months 🙃

Honestly, I think I rock the look (imagine discount Michael Stevens from VSauce), but my head is bloody freezing and this was not something I was expecting when I finally decided to go through with it 😂

@andrhia I'm a hobbyist woodworker, would you like me to send you some from my dust collector? 😂

At the very least, apparently most saw dusts are mostly flavorless, and edible! (Mine are not, I work with exotic hardwoods a lot and they're pretty toxic, so pls no eat).

You can even use them to bulk up rice crispy treats if you want! youtube.com/watch?v=AKDal51f5L

@barefootstache A totally most excellent looking selection, tea bro.🤙 Let me know your ranking in case I'm ever in the area?

Do you happen to be a fan of oolong teas? I have some suggestions in that space if you're interested 😎

So Guix System is pretty sick, but certain packages are still a little buggy, so I'm still stuck with my arch box for now :( Once I can install packages on Julia again, I'm swapping back to my Framework+Guix box.

@Pat @trinsec Thanks for the well wishes Pat.

Unfortunately none of the students wear masks, and I only have a PAPR, which I'd rather not wear to campus (it was pretty expensive, lol).

We're already making plans for how to handle this next time, including making a place for sick people in our basement with HVAC return covers, UV sterilization lights, and cheaper 3d-printed PAPRs (including for public use in general). But for now, we're both just miserable.

And no, I was given Augment (antibiotic) to prevent secondary infection, but no I'm not on Paxlovid. After checking it out, I sort of wish I were, but I'm slowly improving regardless.

@trinsec Oh, thanks bud, this was mostly meant to be a word of warning rather than an attempt at an asynchronous, online pity-party XD

My wife and I were exposed to it 2 years ago with 0 symptoms, and we were double vaccinated, wore masks, etc. So I just wanted to let people know it still can suck hard even if you take all the precautions, and get vaccinated, but apparently the bivalent one does a better job but also has more adverse reactions up front.

Complaining time!

So, I *finally* caught Covid, likely from one of my students. First, I had a slightly sore throat; I though it was just from staying up late practicing for my conference talk. That same day I went out to lunch, as I didn't know I was exposed to Covid...except later that day it started kicking my butt and stealing my lunch money.

First, the horrendous fatigue and 102F fever that knocked me out for a few days, then my throat hurt horribly for two days during which I only ate ice chips: apparently, the covid-laced phlegm contains traces of virus, white blood cells, and fluoroantimonic acid. Then I coughed until I almost threw up multiple times yesterday. Now? I can't cough, laugh, or sneeze without my abs screaming at me from all the coughing yesterday. Oh, and my recurrent tooth/gum infection came back at the same time just to spite me.

To top it all off, my wife caught it, and so did at least one of my colleagues/collaborators/coadvisors during that lunch I mentioned...because the initial symptoms were practically unnoticeable.

Overall, this is the 2nd worse I've ever felt, only eclipsed by my 2 week stay in the hospital with pneumonia as a 10 year old, and I missed my first ever invited conference presentation because of it. 😭

0/5 stars , would not recommend.

@tiago

Is the question really a normative one regarding "deserving" something? Or is it a question of our integrity in providing a public service?

I think *all* papers can benefit from a high quality review. I'm sure higher quality, constructive feedback is something everyone would prefer to receive, but I doubt everyone is willing to provide (e.g. "reviewer 2"). Thus, ignoring the obvious time constraints on faculty, wouldn't it be better to provide such better reviews regardless of my subjective quality judgement? Granted, peer review is all about making such judgements, and I may think a given manuscript is trash. However, I can at least give the authors the courtesy of explaining clearly where/why it's trash, and how it could be improved upon.

I think ELife's spin on this is naive and ill-considered, but I also think the peer review process could use some improvement.

Thoughts?

@trinsec That's probably a good plan! I've been fighting with a recurrent gum infection, and I was panicking over jaw pain. Fortunately everything was fine, and I only had a few minor caries and no severe bone infection or whatever, but I'm getting wisdom tooth surgery in a few weeks and I'm kinda nervous about that :/

Do you happen to use a water flosser? I love mine and it, it helps me ease my anxiety regarding dental work, and to not gag when I floss, as I'm pretty sensitive to the "hair-like" sensation of floss...always have been since I was a kid 🤢

@trinsec Congrats! :D I know all about that pre-dental visit panic 😅

@tiago Turing patterns are pretty incredible, though I don't think most of them evolve this dramatically over the lifetime of an animal like this. Even more interesting is the discretiztaion of the pattern, which seems pretty unique!

So I recently replaced my key switches on my keychron q1 with some really sick drop holy pandas. I really enjoy the more "thock"-y nature of these keys over my old clicky blues, and the fact they come pre-lubed is a huge plus.

There's still a bit of case ping, particularly on stabilized keys and the arrow keys, but the higher actuation force really improves the overall typing experience IMO. Though, getting used to it is taking a bit of time for my muscle memory to adapt 😅

@barefootstache Pro tip from an ex-chemist/chromatographer!

If you want stronger tea, trying to concentrate via brew time or temperature won't work great since there's a steady state equilibrium for how much tea can be extracted in a single "wash" during brewing. Technically speaking, moka pot, kettle, etc are all (more or less) equivalent in extraction ability when you factor in temperature, pressure, volume of liquid, and mass of tea, and time (assuming we're comparing all else being equal such as water quality, tea type, etc). Of course, "over extracting" typically only occurs due to excessively high temperatures, or too much tea mass in the extraction chamber. This can lead to overly bitter tea, so it's not always a good thing to just extract more.

The first thing you should do is extract with RO or distilled water! This maximizes the amount of "space" there is in the solvent to hold that delicious tea goodness. However, if you're changing from brewing with particularly hard water, you'll need to reduce your tea mass or you'll over extract and get bitter tea.

Instead of trying to extract more, you're better off extracting the most you can in the first pass (which provides the highest quality flavor), then doing a post-extraction concentration step. But John (you may be asking yourself) boiling the tea to reduce it may impact the flavor and damage the resultant brew, what do we do?!

I'm glad you asked, figment of my socially deprived imagination! Instead of boiling it, place the tea, uncovered in a refrigerator for however long you want until it has concentrated to your liking. The fridge passively dehumidifies the environment, hence the need for plastic wrap or other materials to keep food from drying out. The cold will inhibit bacterial growth, and reduce the amount of solvent in your beverage without negatively impacting taste! If you're worried about "fridge smell" polluting your beverage, you can either cover it with a dialysis membrane to only allow water to evaporate, or you can just put it in a well-cleaned, dedicated mini/micro fridge, as many people do when dry-aging beef. (I'm honestly not sure which one is cheaper...I guess the mini fridge would be in the long run) The lack of light also prevents visible/UV light from impacting the light sensitive compounds in the beverage as well. If you decide to try this, do it in glass; mugs/ceramic will stain as the water level decreases.

Overall, I think this method is worth a shot, and has been particularly good for making stronger milk tea for things like boba. Though, I usually don't feel the need to uber-concentrate my tea, but you do you 😄
