I am in the unfortunate position of needing to consider rehoming my puppy if nothing else works, and I'm hoping something will, because I'll be heartbroken if I have to give her up.
She is eating up every moment of my time with severe (what seems to be) separation anxiety which means I've barely gotten any work done at all. I'm exhausted, and so is my wife, who already has attentional issues, and the lack of sleep has just made functioning at all with such a demanding pup so much harder.
We're at the end of our rope here, and as much as I absolutely adore this dog, I'm not sure my wife and I can provide what she needs, whatever it is. If anyone else here has struggled with something similar and has advice, please let me know. We're desperate.
@jmw150 Yeah, I've seen both of those since they came out actually! I've been a huge fan of their work, and the extensions thereof. Especially since they leverage the Cuda package to make it trivial to run these operations on GPUs, its pretty incredible that it requires no overhead on the dev's part.
Have you seen their website at fluxml.ai?
@vincent Thanks for sharing; as much as I love their clothing, I'll be boycotting until the situation improves, or they change their mind.
@jmw150 To add to this, I love Julia (and other lisp/pseudolisp dialects like racket). I think it should seriously compete for Python on your list 😉
It has so many nice features, spiffy macros, quasiquoting (though with slightly different syntax), and has been able to do anything I ask of it with flexibility and grace. While the package environment isn't as extensive as Python yet, I'm almost positive it will become the standard for scientific computing within a decade or two, assuming current trends hold (which, obviously, they probably won't, but I still like it lol).
@academicalnerd Please forgive my ignorance of Russian politics (and the gloomy nature of this post), but I would like to make a distinction that may be relevant here. Please feel free to ignore or correct me if you disagree; I would love to hear your perspective.
To me, it seems like you are confusing hatred with indifference, which is much worse than the former. I say this, because it seems that Russia's historically consistent problem solving strategy has been "throw copious quantities of human meat at the problem until it goes away", and I see no signs of that being retired anytime soon.
Hatred and persecution are explicit and drive either rebellion or emigration. Indifference is insidious, and allows long term manipulation of a populace. By claiming to care about them, then stoking fears/creating tension, you can lobotomize a whole host of human beings who end up willingly destroyed on the leader's whim, who is, of course, insulated from any and all risk. Those who are not fully indoctrinated end up justifying their indifferent situation as "not that bad", stay well beyond their window of escape, and end up being roped in with the zealots on the ride of a lifetime.
Indifference allows using people like resources, hatred does not (see Jews etc. in "work" camps during WWII they weren't put to work to help the war, only tortured to death in the guise of work). Many of the unfortunate masses in an indifferent autocracy end up believing the leaders are on their side when, in reality, the ruling class is striving to mentally stunt them with state-generated lies to in raise them into human cattle destined for service or slaughter. In the last century, untold millions of your fellow countrymen were frivolously snuffed out like candles by the will of such indifferent but charismatic leaders. I pray your people do not allow this to happen yet again.
It is most unfortunate, but you and your people are not hated by your government. That would be a preferable state of affairs by comparison. You are not considered to begin with, or at best, are thought of as mere pawns on a board. Your misery is but an afterthought, if it is regarded at all outside the context of preventing a full scale revolution.
I hope you end up with a government (or leaders therein) that actually supports - or at least respects the natural rights of - its people, instead of this authoritarian insanity.
@jmw150 And by efficiently winnowing the obsolete operations from the necessary ones!
Oh! One more thing, for those of you with insomnia, sensory issues to noise while sleeping (or a tired puppy who can't ignore sounds yet) I HEAVILY recommend brownian noise + human heartbeat noises. I'm not sure whatever coma I arose from this morning, but I haven't slept better in bloody ages.
There's a free app on FDroid that provides this, called Noice.
Puppy is getting better at not pooping/peeing all over herself and requiring a 30-50 minute bath, blow-dry, brush session due to a strict diet of pureed pumpkin today. Solid poops, and only ~3-4 instead of 8+ liquid ones yesterday. #winning
Also DAP hormone is a God-send, as it seriously helps her calm down completely in her crate and stay asleep, rather than screaming for 20 minutes then not sleeping for an hour until she starts screaming again. I just need to find a diffuser that doesn't need to be replaced every 6 months and I'll buy it immediately in the hopes it finally breaks the bad screaming habit for good. (we hotboxed her with this lotion and it worked decently lol)
@trinsec @MRECheese I never specified which kind of drain 😜 (e.g. shower, and bathroom sink were the worst for me)
@trinsec @MRECheese If you're lucky it will stay like that, but if we're right, you may face another reinfestation with them ending up in drains, and more. Keep an eye out, and I hope it goes well!
Pro tip: if you get a small puppy, get some sort of smart camera strictly dedicated to monitoring them during crate training. It helps ease your mind if they're crying, and considering she's had 2 poo explosions so far due to an upset belly, helps you check to make sure if they are crying "legitimately" to go outside or just because they dont like being by themselves for any number of femtoseconds.
Also, a floor steamer/general purpose steam cleaner is an absolute must for sanitizing after blowouts. (Honestly, just get the latter with a floor attachment, steam cleaning is incredibly bloody efficient).
@trinsec Hey, these sound like they may be phorid flies instead of fruit flies (based on your brief description), which required vastly different treatment methods than fruit flies. (I've dealt with them a ton in my town, they're awful). Phorid flies eat mold and other nasty stuff in dirt/compost/decaying plants/animals, and tend to "land, run, then fly" whereas fruit flies prefer to just fly around close to the source of food. Fruit flies tend to have bright red eyes as well, if they're black, its likely they're phorid flies. Good luck getting this fully resolved!!
@namark Ah, well, uh....alrighty then.
@namark you asked "why". I gave a possible explanation for "why", but I never said the reason was a good one XD
@namark Hey man, I didn't make the name, I just provided an explanation for a poor one, don't shoot the messenger XD
