@Pat Not sure if you're levying that charge at me, but I hold no reins and have little privilege at this point lol, and academic journals have long been extorting academics to advance their careers. Just look up Elsevier and you'll find loads of information on their insane pricing for both authors and readers. My university alone pays at least $15,000,000 per year just for subscriptions to their journals. It's clearly nonsense.

I think information needs to be as free as possible so everyone can make the best decisions they can. The higher the barrier to entry for accessing knowledge, the faster a society's progress and ability to overcome challenges stagnates due to repeated attempts on futile projects.

This is also why I think negative results of well designed experiments also deserve to be published, which I would love to have as its own section in my journal.

Thoughts?

@Pat And not only that, the amount of medical research behind paywalls is literally delaying life saving treatment to people who need it. The current journal pricing scheme is predatory and frankly, anyone who disagrees needs to have their eyes checked.

But seriously, I think a distributed storage based open-access journal may help alleviate a lot of the issues with current journal pricing schemes which honestly need to be addressed for better science to continue in the future.

@barefootstache I've been watching these guys for the better part of I think 2 years. I'm looking forward to them becoming more accepted so I can use them to help preserve my privacy during purchase without needing to use crypto and worry about all the tax nonsense.

So I've been considering building a distributed, open-access, peer reviewed journal. Anyone interested in helping out?

So windows 11 is garbage, but I'm stuck using it (for the moment) until I know I can reliably play games (Elden Ring etc.) on my new rig with linux.

It's sad when my Thinkpad T420 with arch Linux can run circles around my beefy new desktop when it comes to web-based stuff solely because windows is so bad. I legitimately cannot believe it is the default OS on so many machines and produced by a multi-billion dollar company. It's pathetic, and the devs/company should be ashamed of themselves.

I heavily suggest giving this a read, and I'd love to hear anyone's take on it. I think this article is pretty much on point, and that worries me greatly.

@barefootstache I'm seriously considering a trip to Europe (Netherlands, Germany, and maybe a few other places) this summer to see what my options are...I just want to be in a quiet area with little pollution that's walkable (oh, and with fiber internet for my job lol). Unfortunately, in the US you can pick 2 (maybe only 1).

@freemo Since many chips are leveraging quantum effects now...you're saying quantum mechanics is the assembly language of assembly language. And if the hidden variables hypothesis is true, there's assembly for QM! By induction we claim it's turtles all the way down; this is left as an exercise for the reader.
