There's a parasite that makes wolves 46 times more likely to lead a pack. It's tied to risky behavior generally. In humans, toxoplasma gondii is associated with less conscientiousness and generosity. In women, it's tied to increased tribalism and less cultural liberalism. Oh, and it's also been linked to greater attractiveness.

I'm sorry, WTF #Python ??

>>> [round(x) for x in (0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5, 5.5, 6.5)]
[0, 2, 2, 4, 4, 6, 6]

Why would you round toward the even choice? That makes no sense to me.

For reference, round() in #C chooses the away-from-zero rounding, so you get [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7] with the same input.

tell you something, astronomy is a lot less "staring at the sky in wonder" and a lot more "staring at a terminal window in despair" than most folks expect

If you see this toot (yeah this one right here), can you boost it for me? It will help my new server federate with the wider Mastodon network. 🚀 🙏

I grew up in the industrial north of England, the only star I saw was John Barnes, so a camping trip out to Ashburton Lakes after a move to NZ with its bortle 1/2 dark skies stunned me, and hooked me on astrophotography for life.

This is Lake Heron, gorgeous bit of back country not often visited by tourists.

Codeberg is looking more and more attractive as a GitHub alternative these days.

The web interface is basically GitHub and they've got a preview going now for Woodpecker CI integration.

Sourcehut is also a great option, but Codeberg feels more familiar to people who have spent a lot of time on GitHub.

An Incredible Day In Internet History

It started with the Twitter lockout. 10,000 new users per hour. A QUARTER MILLION people migrated to Mastodon in one day. The servers struggled. Remarkably, admins all over the world built up capacity in real time. New users were patient. The system held.

It's running better now. There will be more hard days ahead, but people powered social media has arrived.

@pmidden Do you have working in yet? It is working for me, but I don’t remember doing anything special to configure it.

A tip for anyone trying to convert from MS Word format to using . To get source code blocks to convert to verbatim environments in latex, create a style called "Source Code" and apply this to your source code in Word. Make sure to use (manual) line breaks rather than paragraph breaks within the code block.

One of the nice things about Mastodon right now is everyone is trying so hard to be friendly and create community. Lots more interesting conversations because people are making an effort. It's great!

As an example the #projects hashtag, an open invitation for creative people to talk about interesting things they've built. Lots of good stuff there. #introduction is also a wholesome thing.

@skybert @datenschauer I’m afraid I haven’t explored Jedi’s features properly yet. There are comprehensive docs if you’d like to dig deeper: jedi.readthedocs.io/en/latest/
