@Xavier you exit vi like a normal person. we exit vi by attaching gdb to it and calling exit(). we are not the same.

@cwebber @vv for example! both Christine and I use org-mode. However, Christine uses org-mode to unfold reality into a cosmic lotus flower of neatly organized ideas, and I mostly use org-mode to make text bold sometimes.

@mattblaze Agree with others that have chimed in. I've spent several years either as a poll inspector. Particularly in small towns it's a long but fun day. You get to see everyone and get to meet neighbors you don't know. It also made it possible to become friends with my counterparts in the other party sharing pictures and stories of kids and grandkids.

@mattblaze

I'm a California resident and repeat poll worker. It's a lonely job here; universal vote-by-mail ballots mean most people cast their ballots from their kitchen tables. The general election gets a fair amount of election day turnout. The off-year elections are sparse! We had two in-person voters at my polling station for a 2020 special election.

But it's still an interesting and rewarding experience. Most of all, you learn about the procedures that make voter fraud hard.

城中村

———— ⁂ ————

The EU, UK, and various states are pushing "protect the children!" laws that will effectively mandate age verification technologies for most websites.

Turns out the French data protection agency (which doesn't mess around) has said that all existing age verification technologies violate people's privacy...

These issues reek of incredible inexperience making multi user software. Something you really don't want for a site like social media that contains so much sensitive data.

TL;DR If you've created an account on Hive your personal data might've been compromised. We can't be 100% sure that this group are the first to find something as gaping and obviously trivial to exploit as this.

Feel free to pass it along to friends you know who've signed up on Hive, and if they're a VTuber let them know they're still welcome here. =w=

Since the magic word of the day is ping, this is your reminder that the TTL can tell you what kind of OS you're dealing with. This is most likely a Linux box. subinsb.com/default-device-ttl #infosec #ping

Anyone know of some good studies that examine the psychological impacts of “going viral”? (Working on a project with a first year PhD student and we’re coming up short on recent studies in this space… wondering if there might be some older work out there.)

Did my cat wake up from his nap in the midst of my Zoom meeting with students and proceed to walk all over my desk and keyboard, eat potato chips from a bowl on the table behind me, jump onto my tall bookshelf, knock papers on the ground, and yell repeatedly?

That’s quite a specific question. What makes you ask?

looking at the freebsd ping bug and thinking "linux ping, if it had this bug, would blame you or your distro for not correctly configuring apparmor, but freebsd actually has properly engineered its system such that the capabilities mechanism is part of the core OS and isn't tacked on"

This is awesome news. A third Homo erectus skull discovered in China -- and this one might be in really good shape. H. erectus is an early human who left Africa and fanned out across Asia over a million years ago. Fun fact: they were likely the first human ancestor to tame fire, which means they invented cooking. I honestly don't think Homo sapiens can top that. nature.com/articles/d41586-022

Today I deleted the “talk to Yoel about data access” action item from my to-do list. It had been hanging around in page 2 to-do limbo for several months while I was waiting (wishing) for things to blow over. (Tear.) Now, we watch our Twitter collection infrastructure to continue to degrade and begin to build our next generation of tools atop other platforms and information resources.
