This video on ActivityPub and moderation by @derek is very well done. Great to see @mmasnick cited. https://conf.tube/videos/watch/d8c8ed69-79f0-4987-bafe-84c01f38f966

Thoughts on the term "walled garden"
I've seen lots of things in the tech sector called walled gardens, from hardware ecosystems to social media. I agree with the sentiment being expressed, but I take issue with the term used.
To me, gardens are something beautiful, a form of artistic self-expression intended to spark joy. Calling Apple or Google a walled garden is an insult to gardens.
Social media isn't a walled garden, it's a fucking roach motel.
emotional thread about activitypub, twitter, the fediverse, transphobia, bluesky, etc etc
There's so much I haven't said about the making of the fediverse, ActivityPub, this moment. And so much of all of this feels really emotional for me *personally*. How we got here. The making of the spec. The huge role transphobia is playing in Twitter falling apart paralleling the huge role that trans people played building the fediverse. What I am trying my damnedest to build for the future of decentralized social networks.
There's so much I'd like to say, but talking about it feels dangerous, forbidden, selfish.
Sometimes I do kinda feel written out of all this history, but maybe it doesn't matter. Maybe it's for the best.
I didn't realize how fucked up that is until the other day when I commented out loud that I was "lucky" that I didn't get BlueSky because, given what's happening with Twitter, I'd almost certainly be getting a ton of transphobic attention right now. And a friend pointed out how terrible it was that I was even put in a position to *think* that.
Heck, up until pointing that, that's a thing I never even mentioned publicly. There you go, now you know: I was, I believe, second in the running to run BlueSky. It's not a shock they gave it to Jay Graber, I think she's great. But... (cotd ...)
Do you have a WordPress blog?
You can turn it into a Fediverse server using a simple plug-in. This means that people on Mastodon can follow it just like they follow any account on here.
Here's more info about how to do it:
https://fedi.tips/the-fediverse-beyond-mastodon/#WordPress
(NOTE: This doesn't work on free blogs hosted by wordpress.com)
If you appreciate the plugin, remember to send its maker @pfefferle some donations at https://notiz.blog/donate
today's #mastodon surprise
Ctrl-clicking the time of a post to open it in a new tab, it goes to a different instance entirely. I know why but it's disorienting.
I guess #drafts can be simulated via private posts.
Unlike twitter they will be synced across devices. The "delete and re-draft" button can be used for editing, and also pulls your draft to the top.
No indexing though - the search here is by hashtags only, and unlisted/private posts are opted-out from search/discovery. You'd have to scan your posts to find a draft. Easy for recent drafts, otherwise need to fetch and grep locally (how?).

Going to try to post some stuff that is not about tech policy, not about the other site, etc. You know, just fun stuff.
So here: if you like card magic (hell, even if you don't think you like card magic), you should watch Dani DaOrtiz's performance on Penn & Teller's Fool Us this weekend, which shows why he is the greatest card magician in the world right now. It's not on YouTube yet, but I think it will be soon.
People on here being disdainful towards birdsite folk
Hey folk - making fun of people who find Mastodon difficult and claiming that it "weeds out anyone too stupid to use Mastodon" or "they're too attached to Twitter so their opinion of Mastodon is suspicious" is really not the move.
Firstly, this was the kind of rhetoric that got me infamously racially harassed my first few hours on Mastodon back when it was super new.
Mainly though - it's unneeded superiority, it's ignoring very valid accessibility concerns, and it's just straight up exclusionary.
