The "#Vulnerabilities 1001: C-Family Software Implementation Vulnerabilities" free course by #OpenSecurityTraining2 is awesome and very recommended to all developers and beginner code auditors.
Also, make sure to check out all the other high-quality, free #OST2 training courses.

Dipping a toe with my first “real” post. This story is from July, but I thought it might be of interest to folks who don’t normally follow math news or who might want to see the war in Ukraine from another perspective. I traveled to Switzerland to report and photograph this profile of Maryna Viazovska, who this year became the second woman to win a Fields Medal in the award’s 86-year history. https://www.quantamagazine.org/ukrainian-mathematician-maryna-viazovska-wins-fields-medal-20220705/
Tonight's #catphoto is from Jimmy's hilarious times at the vet. You'd swear he hadn't just meowed bl**dy murder on the way there. I'd take him to more places esp senior homes if he could handle car rides. Vet loves him. He loves him back! #mastocats #mainecoon #cat #manitoba #catsofmastodon
There's A LOT of discussion about content moderation right now and very little of it touches on the fact that we've all lived on the big social sites for the last decade-plus thanks to the massively exploitated labor of mostly-invisible moderation workers. The social web at scale wouldn't have happened without these laborers, who in addition to shit wages, have been exposed to literally every imaginable horror.
If we're remaking this world, let's do better on that front.
I also need to find another SCSI-1 HVD device to test on, so I don't blow up the SCSI front-end on my IBM 9348-002, as that's literally irreplaceable

Shameless plug (1Password's new typeshare crate)
My colleagues at 1Password have just open sourced our typeshare crate. It makes it much easier for #rust devs to create and manage FFIs and producing data types for #GoLang, #Swift, #kotlin, and #TypeScript built from the structs we need those to know about.

The effort at Mozilla to rewrite our crash infrastructure in #Rust yielded a number of excellent tools several of which were not written by us, but by other companies and individuals. Check them out:

Hearing strong indications that lawmakers will try to move the Kids Online Safety Act (#KOSA) during the "lame duck" session. This is a terrible bill that won't make kids safer online but will subject them to censorship and surveillance. It could lead to biometric age verification, widespread removal of LGBTQ+ content, and a bunch of other bad crap. Very few civil society groups have spoken out against it. We need #LGBTQ groups especially to sound the alarm. Plz help spread the word if you can

twitter: your mastodon server admin reads every DM you send. they actually read them and assign a score
mastodon admins who roll their own: sorry everyone images aren't going to work for the next sixty-ninety years. what's a DM
99% of mastodon admins who are just normies who pay for shared hosting: we can't read dms. we can't even choose when to update. we can't even turn the lights off in this room
lead mastodon dev: actually they're "mentioned people only posts," hope this helps. Cheers!
really enjoyed reading this interactive guide to flexbox, I learned some new things about flexbox (like how it interacts with `min-width` which has confused me many times in the past)

In Duck Hunt the NES Zapper worked by blacking out screen & drawing white blocks around targets when you fire, for a couple frames. The diode in the Zapper detects the change in light intensity and tells the computer if it’s pointed at a lit target. #gamedev #retrogaming

Coming from a #Haskell background, I'm very sad that #Rust makes it so hard to avoid mutable references.
I don't want to mutate things in place, I want to write functions that consume their arguments and then return an entirely newly constructed result, but that will often land you in trouble in Rust. This is not about performance, I mean you will find it difficult to even structure your programs.
For example, there's an entire cottage industry of *solutions* around updating a mutable value wholesale, i.e. where you compute the replacement by consuming the original value.
