I was using free and open source software for years before contributing to it, and even today, I still mostly blog about FLOSS than contribute! But don’t worry if like me you felt uneasy about using more than contributing, one day you might have an idea and start working on it!
(yes this graph is made in excel, sue me)
Sam Altman is back as OpenAI CEO with a new board.
And of course the new board was hand picked to no longer restrict Altman so he can run OpenAI as a business as he sees fit (until he jumps to one of his own things he's been preparing for months now).
The interesting aspect of this: The new board no longer has any women, the only woman on the old board was replaced by Larry Summers who's known to think that women just have less "intrinsic aptitude" for "science and engineering". So Yeah. Says a lot about what OpenAI considers important.

Did you grow up reading Calvin and Hobbes? Did you ever wonder what kind of book Calvin would write after he grew into his eyes? After his curiosity took on a glaze and his mischief grew barbs? The answer is The Mysteries by Bill Watterson. It’s a picture book (illustrated by Bill Watterson and John Kascht) but it’s not a child’s book. Short and dark and gorgeous. It hits way harder than you expect, and you don’t even mind the blow.
I’m still seeing people argue that #OpenAI is a responsible actor on the basis that they asked to be regulated. No, they didn’t. They wanted the *market* to be regulated, which would make it much harder for new actors to enter, and more or less impossible for #OpenSource. It was not an example of them being driven by ethics, but rather the opposite.
LB most people in Sillicon Valley will tell you that they believe the free market is good and trickles down into better lifes for people, and that regulation causes suffering and hampers developent. However, the very instant that they see their way of life disrupted by other people's choices they will call for "we the community" to "solve this", which is basically just a greek frat house version of collective intervention.
