So OpenAI just released a detector of AI-generated text, I assume because of concerns in education / homework.

Maybe this is good?

No, it's very bad.

They claim 26% true positives, 9% false positives. Assume 10% of submitted homework is chatgpt generated, you get the classic counterintuitive outcome of poor predictive power: if a homework is flagged, there's a 3:1 chance it's *human* generated.

This is going to cause a lot of harm. It should be immediately recalled.

Mastodon this morning is now indistinguishable from my Twitter feed of about six weeks ago— except it's missing garbage tweets and abusive drive-bys.

Do all the people on Twitter using the platform to complain about Elon ad nauseum not understand that if they left the platform and stopped engaging, it would turn into Parler, lose its advertisers and die? It's just a private app that monetizes off of engagement. So don't engage.

Also #newhere in the #Fediverse. I hope a lot of #science and #climate people will make the move here and help make this a real alternative!

A think an under-rated benefit of having a decent amount of automated test coverage might be the impact it has on your ability to upgrade stuff

New version of Python? If your comprehensive tests pass, you're good to go!

This is one of the reasons I never mock dependencies: I want my tests to exercise libraries I'm using too, so I can quickly tell that my stuff keeps working in the face of a dependency upgrade
