ChatGPT without a doubt is not a pure language model. It is a hybrid system that coordinates between an intuitive language model and many interpreters and search engines. I've written about the viability of this kind of architecture here: https://medium.com/intuitionmachine/the-coordination-of-intuition-and-rational-thought-bb4b9e3e1ac8

#ChatGPT has created a new wave of amateur futurists who've made some bold and nonsensical predictions based on nothing more than their being surprised at the output. When you show people where it fails spectacularly, they seem to shrug it off as though a couple more tweaks and everything will be fine. The cost of failure is low for the ChatGPT demo but in the real world, these failures can have devastating consequences. Another great article by @garymarcus raising the alarm. https://garymarcus.substack.com/p/ais-jurassic-park-moment

In synthetic biology classes, I ask students what biological function they want to create, and one popular answer is "photosynthesis in mammals".
Now, it's achieved! The authors transplanted membrane-coated thylakoids into chondrocytes and mice! Congrats!
We want to teach scientific rigor at scale. Major NIH funded initiative. We will teach a small curriculum. And ridiculously overengineer all materials (and test, teach, optimize etc). For that we look for manager/admin: https://t.co/tw3kyq5ONf and curriculum developer https://t.co/c0pebGMNzv roles. Please lmk if any of you have a lead
Dear Mastadon hivemind:
The http://www.BiodiversityStripes.info website is highlighting biodiversity loss, globally and regionally using a similar concept to the climate stripes.
We are looking for other sources of biodiversity data which can be turned into stripes to highlight this critical issue.
Any leads for long & coherent time series welcome!

@jocelyn_etienne I'm coming to a point in my life where I empathize so much with the effects of all the systemic and bureaucratic barriers that #womenInSTEM like Perey surmounted, that reading their stories makes me feel more fatigued than inspired.
But for the younger at heart, here is another accessible description of her achievements. Marguerite Perey, or how lab techs are also scientists & we must dismantle classist as well as racist and sexist barriers.

4 lectureships in #neuroscience in Bristol, UK. (2 junior, 2 senior).
Offers £39,745 - £68,823. (Not a typo, unfortunately.)
Not wanting to single out Bristol here, note all UK universities offer these ridiculously low salaries. The expectation, I can only guess, is that your partner with a higher salary subsidises the university via the institution of marriage, or you are independently wealthy, or choose not to have a family.
tho always weird to give a seminar to myself, it's done! have a listen here if you like: https://youtu.be/i0GAhB3a2F8
the 2nd half is *unpublished* data on #tissue #CD4 #Tcells during #influenza and how they fit into a network of #CD8 #Bcells, #IgA & #NKcells.
I've received feedback from someone working on tumors that some of it brings new perspective on his data. In return I learned some new stuff about bladder cancer.
This open exchange of ideas is why I'm a scientist.
