when I have been a hiring manager and an applicant does not fit what I need I think "oh interesting! sadly not the right fit for this job" and I promise you I have never, ever thought "who's this delusional person applying for this position? how dare they?!". you're not wasting my time I get paid for this.

hey, you know those "tell me what you were doing when you crashed" boxes you almost never fill out?

I just want you to know that the last... 3? crashes I've worked on have all had BRILLIANT clues for what was wrong in there from users. If you have ANY idea what you were doing, and can put it into words? please, please do, your assistance is HUGELY appreciated. Even just "I was adjusting the app settings” can be a clue!

Something I've started to see as really problematic when I look back at workplace situations over the years is people being conflict avoidant. I think folk conflate it with de-escalation but it ends up having the opposite effect.

If you're working on a team that is not all white cishet men there *are* going to be harmful behaviours like racist, sexist, homophobic microaggresions at the very least. You need to address that shit when it crops up or you're just further marginalising people.

I once had a user who refused to let us install a new version of our app on their machine, saying “I don’t want a new version, I want you to fix the version I have”.

@lorihc I started doing agile around 2003 in CA & I don’t remember that term, but there a lot of stuff from then I don’t remember 😅 Been East Coast again near 20 years & doing agile continuously, never heard from multiple trainers and coaches 🤷🏼‍♂️

Every once in a while, a guy presses me about my experience as a woman in tech, expecting something rosy.

I say: "Imagine that all your same-gender peers for the first 15 years of your career…were not there. That was my experience."

You'd be astonished at the pushback I get because it is just so hard for them to conceptualize so many people in their career just vanishing.

That's how it is for women and many people of color in tech.
