@emiliano I did have access to the data, it's on a who needs access basis. I did have fun though working through loads of spec pdf docs to work out how the encoded telemetry is decoded into something meaningful and also how to convert C based bitwise operations into Golang versions which was all new to me.

The fun difference is, these days, you wouldn't be able to do this project because of all the 3rd party dependencies build chains rely on, back in the 80s that wasn't a concern 😄

@emiliano There's plenty of uninteresting stuff, but its what you make of it I think, treat it as a learning exercise. The most boring are generally where I get frustrated being foreign and I'm tasked with working on something where I'm hobbled by the fact I'm not cleared to see all the data or whatever.

Most interesting was a few years ago where I ported some of the old Voyager spacecraft ground data systems from Sun OS to "modern" Go systems in AWS.

@engelbart I work all the hours! 😩

Its tongue in cheek really, I very much enjoy it but it can be quite intense.

I haven't done an so I guess I should introduce myself.

My name is Tom, I'm a and platform engineer at JPL and I've been slaving away there for the past 6 1/2 years.

I also enjoy educating, open science/data and software in my spare time.

I'm also to add to the entertainment.

The Mrs woke up at 9:45AM and went back to bed at 2PM....

Oh no, definitely not jetlagged

@dylanparry In some ways its the same in others its not. Make sure you use hashtags as search is different. To find users just stick their full handle in the search box. Because of the federated nature you can find things across all servers, but some servers run different or custom versions of mastodon so features will vary depending on where you reside.

@inspired Sorry about that. There must be something about the different instances and how they communicate, or not. The direct link to the post by @djnavarro blog.djnavarro.net/posts/2022-

Here's my blog entry about moving from Twitter to Mastodon

It has a couple of salty notes in that people might enjoy, plus first impressions and some thoughts on stuff I plan to do with the Mastodon API simonwillison.net/2022/Nov/5/m

@jacklowe welcome to the new world Jack. Where currently home streams seem curated and not full of promoted tweets and tweets from people you don't follow 😆

This morning I have mostly been reveling in the fact the Mrs declared she didn't have jetlag, then her and the kids all went to sleep past mightnight last night and woke up at 9:45am by my alarm 😁

They are currently catching up on a million strictly come dancings as zombies in front of the TV.

@Ryanteck Engagement on Twitter is impossibly hard. I keep noticing how few of the folks who I actually engage with turn up on my Twitter feed. I keep having to search for people to see if they're still active and then I find their last tweet was like 20 minutes ago.... Its not like I follow 10,000 people.

Got a cool shot when I got to take the family on a tour of NASA JPL. The kids stood in front of the color by numbers "image" taken by Mariner 4 in 1965 and hand coloured by impatient JPL scientists who wanted to see what Mars looked like. gizmodo.com/this-paint-by-numb
