yesterday: "man, I wonder how much of the corona relief VAT cut will actually go to consumers. it might not be much."

today: hard discounters frantically putting up "we are passing the full VAT cut to consumers" signs

yeah okay in retrospect we should have expected that. german groceries is cutthroat.

@LuigiEsq@mastodon.social Holy fuck!! Not something I'd heard about.
Not something I myself would say in that context, but I don't at all think it's wrong of you to say that then. She sounds like a monstrous individual who should not have been allowed to maintain her career.

Facebook bans ‘violent network’ of far-right boogaloo accounts - Facebook took action to remove a network of accounts Tuesday related to the “boogaloo” movement, a ... more: feedproxy.google.com/~r/Techcr #onlineextremism #facebook #social #tc

@LuigiEsq@mastodon.social Given that the only people I'd ever say or ever had said something like that about so far are Donald Trump, Stephen Miller, Martin Shkreli, and Pentti Linkola; and given that Betsy Rothstein is a gossip columnist, I am very curious why you would say that.

It's clear that you can’t count on large tech companies to secure data sufficiently. The more important point is that passwords do not offer sufficient security. Most experts agree that it is time for a radical change. But how? A few solutions exist!

The Chinese government just made its oppressive domination over Hong Kong indisputable.

A new law suggests that taking part in the protests could be interpreted as a crime with a maximum penalty of life in prison. Also, anyone suspected of breaking the law can be put under (more) surveillance.

And what if you want to flee the country, because you don't enjoy being a 1984 character? The "crime of secession" has a maximum penalty of—you guessed it—life in prison.

And may the odds be ever in your favour...

@Phaedrus In New York State nursing home deaths were worsened by a colossal bureaucratic blunder on the part of the state: forcing nursing homes to take COVID-19 patients that came to them. The reasoning was that COVID-19 patients would be safer in a facility than at home, failing to grasp the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Cuomo's blame evasion on this has been shameful, a giant blemish on his (comparatively speaking) good handling of this.

I think I’ve started mentally tuning out online petitions. I know their reasoning, but too many things have happened which seem to exponentially generate more of them and I just don’t have the capacity to register the details of each one anymore

My hope is that after all the conservative boomers and dimwits leave for their new echo chambers, people will start noticing other issues (like technical ones) with YT/Twitter/Reddit and start founding alternatives themselves. Granted they'll be less echo-chambery than Parler, but at least we will finally have some competition in the social media market.

Alternatively we could see people move to the Fediverse.

@EuphoriaLavender
A few days ago I realized I was starting to get a dopamine rush from Twitter. I immediately pivoted to Mastodon for good. There is no way I'm getting hooked on the cesspit that is Twitter, and Mastadon seems to have gotten busier in my absence.

Sometimes I think with nostalgia about my discovery of Mastodon, and how deeply immersed I quickly became. Oh, that amazing Toots, the wonderful people, the creativity. Alas, sitting in one spot reading and typing isn't the best activity for an optimal me, so instead of getting immersed in social media of any kind (or even online research), I generally avoid it. I like to think about the virtual encounters I've had over the years, wonder about the people and sometimes even check to see what's up

If a does not sway you with a tortured argument that a given person is a rapist, a block is their best response. It's not like trolls have class, after all...

@globcoco Doubt it. From what I have heard, if anything they're probably accommodating eavesdropping.
