Hello!

I'm tired of gushing about Mastodon a thousand times in a thousand places, so I wrote a post to summarize some info about it for folks who are *possibly* interested.

blog.mjb.im/mastodon-and-the-f

It covers the what/why/how as well as clearing up some misconceptions and whatnot.

It is meant to be educational and informative about what the heck "Mastodon" and "the Fediverse" is. If you know someone who might be interested, consider sending this their way!

Hope this helps!

Hi! mastodon.social is being slow right now, as far as I can tell because there's twice as many people using it at the same time as ever have; I'm working on making it go fast again, but in the meantime, do remember to invite people to joinmastodon.org instead of directly to mastodon.social. People don't have to be on the same server to follow you! Thanks!

I remember one of the things that motivated me to look into the state of decentralized social media (and ultimately begin working on Mastodon) in 2016 were talks that a controversial billionaire might buy Twitter.

There will be a downtime of 2 hours, likely later today, as we upgrade to a larger server.

There is something seriously wrong with the German ruling party SPD.

The party has a travel service, which despite the invasion of Ukraine, is organizing a trip for party members to Stalin’s summer house in Sochi on October 24th.

Would they visit Hitler’s summer house?

One of Russia's largest textbook printers, Prosveshcheniye, has ordered editors to minimize or remove references to Ukraine and Kyiv from schoolbooks on history, literature and geography: "The task before us is to make it look like Ukraine simply does not exist."

@jack
1. "He took all the important parts, the prospering south, the grain, the agriculture. " -- From what I can tell the region that Russia has seized in the South isn't all or even most of the agricultural land in Ukraine. While there is a lot of wheat grown in that portion of Ukraine, it's by no means all of it, and many of the other crops Ukraine grows are grown in other parts of the country. In fact, the South of the country is mostly hot and dry, and Crimea itself especially so. ipad.fas.usda.gov/rssiws/al/up

2. "He secured a corridor to Krimea" --- Occupied a corridor? Yes. Secured a corridor? No. Putin is going to be dealing with revolts in the area as well as fending off attacks from the rest of Ukraine.

3. "What remains is destroyed land, caught in war forever." ---
This is a really editorialized description. I'm not going to comment on it.

4. " already has become a de facto military dictator. " --- Even if Zelenskyy were a dictator and not a president with emergency powers, he's a *very* anti-Putin one and one who has the fierce support of both the country that elected him, of the EU, and of NATO, the latter two of whom are currently supplying Ukraine with funds and weapons in order to fight off Putin. So even if one assumes this claim about Zelenskyy being a dictator is true (and I don't), that doesn't help Putin in any way.

5. "And the warzone will effectively isolate and protect from and ." This ignores the fact that the EU and NATO are likely to grow from this. Sweden and Finland are likely to join NATO since they want protection in the event Putin invades them. It also ignores the economic and political isolation of Russia and fact that even those countries in the EU which *haven't* been invaded are set to increase their defense budges as a direct result of Putin doing this.

In short, Putin hasn't already won, and certainly not on the fronts that reporter asserted.

@rlamacraft Massive action *is* needed. Personal lifestyle changes may help ease one's moral compass --- admittedly a good thing --- but they aren't going to change things, unlike government action on the matter.

I'm really starting to think that anything short of a WW2-scale government-led mobilisation effort to fight climate change is just a bit of window dressing. Individual actions like flying less or going vegan, or corporate actions like carbon offsetting are just not going to scale fast enough and are probably just a distraction from meaningful change. The technology is there and the transition will (probably) happen eventually at this point, we just need the political action to drastically reduce the timeframe.

@thamesynne Heck, I wouldn't trust him to run a small web forum without destroying it.

what exactly are Elon Musk's principles of free speech? as far as i can tell, they're exactly the same as every other obnoxious squillionaire techbro: "i should be free to say exactly what i want at all times, with no comebacks ever"

@thamesynne More or less. He comes across as extremely ignorant of anything to do with running a social media site.

@freemo Correction: it just did that for me for quite a bit of time.

@freemo @trinsec I have not, but I also haven't been on all that much.
