If Musk is truly deactivating and firing contractors en masse, you all better get your data archive saved and get your shit off this dumpster fire now.

Hacky folks, please resist finding ways to scrape the fediverse, build archives, automate tools and connect to people via bot without their consent.
Just resist the urge. Because you're not going to think to check for robots.txt, but you ought to, that's how we communicate we don't want to be involved. You're probably not going to bother to read the various terms of service for the instances you touch, many of which explicitly ask you not to do any scraping or automated activity beyond normal use of the service. You're not going to know to respect people using the NoBot hashtag that was meant to prevent automated follows. You're certainly not going to parse user profiles and pinned posts to learn how people like to be approached, what will get you blocked, or even think to heavily throttle your activity because instances are falling over in response to load.
Whatever your thing is, make it 100% opt-in. Make it appropriate for a significantly more at-risk user than you are. Make sure it forgets things, purges info about servers it can't contact, can't operate in any sort of logged-in mode where consent is an issue.
We will straight up help advertise your cool thing if it respects users properly and takes the time to consider the safety and preferences of every person involved. There are a lot of fun, thoughtfully-designed toys! And there are a lot of people really tired of having to come and tell you off when you wanted to help, honestly. Help yourself and ask around before you flip on your cool new thing, let folks point out what you're missing.
@geostreber
Okay, I just looked it up. It looks quite impressive, especially compared to the crap that made me switch to Linux in the first place.
That being said...how did it take Microsoft so long to make a decent terminal application?
@geostreber Windows has a new terminal and it's not crap? I need a link to this!!
@gigatexal @mastodonusercount It is...for now.
During this and past Twitter waves it generally slows down at night in the US/Europe, with the past 5 days being a notable exception.
There may also be a weekend effect but I don't have enough of these waves to know for sure.
@atomicpoet Up until the current growth of the active userbase by 370% it was very much sustainable. I don't know why people seem to think that every active (or mind you, inactive, as some people think total user number somehow correlates to this) user breaks the rules on a daily basis. The 5-10 reports per day were very much handleable by even a single moderator. But now I am literally in the process of onboarding more moderators.
Twitter continuing tire fire
TL;DR - failed bcc to all laid off personnel results in reply-all hilarity.
@popehat @mmasnick
So do either or both of you have any thoughts on this latest development? https://www.lex18.com/news/national/sen-ed-markey-demands-musk-answer-questions-on-fake-twitter-accounts
@liaizon @mastodonusercount Usually during these Twitter-related surges it goes down when most of the US and Europe go to sleep.
The past few days have been an exception.

@Gargron I usually use CWs for longer posts...like recently when I posted a literal blog entry with markdown formatting.

Just so you know, my mother had issues getting her data even when she *did* get the email.
Let me know what happens in your case.

Back in 2010 #twitter launched their “t.co” link shortened. And I thought at the time how profoundly terrible that is. If the database and/or ability to look up t.co links ever changed, we would literally lose information. We will no longer know what URL was tweeted. It burns a huge hunk of internet history to the ground if we lose that. It was vain and shortsighted and stupid. Now in 2022, I wonder how many months we have left when we can resolve those links. And what happens to collective internet history when they’re done?
In another funny twist, what about trials or legal matters that hinge on the content of a tweet? And suddenly you can’t get the content of that tweet? Or where did that link point to?
Nobody saw this coming except for all of us who saw this coming.
Twitter's "get a copy of your data" service isn't working
So my mother was waiting to deactivate her Twitter account because she was waiting for Twitter to fulfill her request for a copy of her data. She made the request a few days ago, and today she finally got the email saying that her data was ready for download. When she clicked to download her data, she got a message saying "This feature is no longer available".
At this point she went ahead and deactivated her account.
