With the revitalization of the open web and the fediverse, it’s worth revisiting all of the parts of the social web that we’ve lost, and reflecting on how we might rebuild them in a Mastodon world. anildash.com/2016/08/08/the-lo

uspol, abortion

States need to stay the fuck out of the Doctors' Office. No politician has a right to tell a woman and her doctor what care she needs or how to provide it! Abortion is a medical procedure. It's healthcare!
cnn.com/2022/11/16/health/abortion-texas-sepsis/index.html

@War_Kittens That sounds awful, and also not surprising given that the HITECH act had a severely anticompetitive effect on the market for EHR software.

There was a M5.4 #earthquake in west #Texas today.

This area didn’t used to have many earthquakes. In 2019 that changed, and since then it’s had quite a few earthquakes, with more than 375 quakes with a magnitude higher than M3.5.

These earthquakes (probably including this one) are likely the result of wastewater injection - pumping fluids in to the ground.

Why am I not surprised by this, especially the fact that Musk hasn't done anything about it despite claiming to have "freed" the bird?

It's almost like relying on AI to make judgement calls about inappropriate content is a terrible idea.

@War_Kittens While the company in this article is not named, the commenters have identified it as Epic, and Epic does indeed use Mumps and Visual Basic.

thedailywtf.com/articles/A_Cas

@War_Kittens From what I have heard, Epic is a fossil of a company that only lives because of the HITECH act. Its servers use a language called MUMPS that is literally from the PDP-10 era and which probably is similarly of obscenely great age.

I'm an astronomer currently fighting for regulation and better engineering of satellites (particularly Starlink) so that the night sky isn't ruined for everyone: theconversation.com/soon-1-out

I also have super cute baby goats!

ML2 boosted

@PlatinumWarlock Hi! And yeah, I am totally sympathetic to the fact that Starlink is the only viable option in many places (I am also a rural internet user, though fortunately I have other options for internet access - Just a bit further out from the city there is nothing else). I highly encourage you to write a quick email to Starlink as a paying customer and tell them that you care about the night sky! It's absolutely an engineering problem that they can make better if they care enough.

@joehumphrey
Same thinking when I was young to. Our knowledge of the world is more basic and we did not know of the complexity and downright nastiness that the world can exhibit.
That say I try to pick out and see the beauty, the wonderful, the astounding that is everywhere in the world. Sometimes these things are hiding but they are there.

I just dumped all my Tesla stock. It was a good run, but time to sell.

Isn't it kinda weird that #Mastodon gets described as 'left-leaning' because we handle more strickt rules and don't tolerate things like bullying.. It could be me but I perceive this as 'normal'.

I mean you don't call people all kinds of names in a conversation on the street or in the store right? Even if you don't agree🤔

Somehow it feels the (online) standards for treating each other have declined so much over the past few years :sad_cat:

Let them talk, we are a loving and happy community!

Streaming video is going to be huge for the Fediverse.

Right now, I know if three video apps in active development:

1. PeerTube
2. Owncast
3. A semi-secret project I'm working on with @reiver that has something to do with primates

Hey Galactica, what is the number of intersections between the chords of a regular polygon?

Umm, no. It’s Binomial(n,4) plus correction terms for degenerate points. So you haven’t read Poonen and Rubinstein’s 1997 paper, or even Wikipedia on the Moser Circle Problem?

I’m boldly going where I haven’t gone before, which is right here at this site. Apparently this is a “toot.” I would appreciate a follow!

Everyone please be aware that the service we used to use that provided tickers went down and doesnt plan to go back up.. This unfortunately slows down the default theme.

As such I switched the default theme to the no-ticket theme and this works just fine. However im not sure it will help for people already signed up on the server.

To fix the problem please go intto your preferences and change the theme to the no-ticket theme.
