Tumblr to add support for ActivityPub, the social protocol powering Mastodon and other apps https://techcrunch.com/2022/11/21/tumblr-to-add-support-for-activitypub-the-social-protocol-powering-mastodon-and-other-apps/
And they mention the word ActivityPub! In the title! In a major article! Not just "Mastodon"!
Wow!
To my fellow instance admins:
Please don't tell Black people and other people of color to leave your instance and to go find another that's preferable to them.
That's like telling people to go find another neighbourhood. And you know what that sounds like?
Segregation.
Let's not segregate the Fediverse.
@stanstallman @mergerson In reality, the server was trying to *protect* her against an impersonator.
Disturbed by reports of Black Mastodon users—Black women in particular—having negative experiences on this app, including being randomly banned for discussions of racism. Some of these users will not come back. All will share their experiences. The answer is not to condescendingly lecture them on “how the fediverse works,” as if their experiences are inevitable, nor to swear to do better next time. (There may not be one.) It’s to do better now lest the reputation of this app be cemented.
Hearing strong indications that lawmakers will try to move the Kids Online Safety Act (#KOSA) during the "lame duck" session. This is a terrible bill that won't make kids safer online but will subject them to censorship and surveillance. It could lead to biometric age verification, widespread removal of LGBTQ+ content, and a bunch of other bad crap. Very few civil society groups have spoken out against it. We need #LGBTQ groups especially to sound the alarm. Plz help spread the word if you can

Making a home for myself at Mastodon after a decade on Twitter. Love to make the plunge but where is everybody? #manuscripts people seem hard to find, as are #medievalists. I will jump if you are!
twitter hive rant
@fries
It's a relatively new service operated by literally two people.
It's probably going to be a flash in the pan in my humble opinion, but it's still silly.
@akselmo@fosstodon.org
I currently have no plans to start a Hive Social account. Its privacy policy is hugely lacking. It was allegedly created by a person named Kassandra Pop who now goes by Raluca—that's all I could find so far. And it has two employees (Raluca and a full stack engineer), neither of whom appear to specialize in security. Gonna roll the dice and hold out on this one.
And here is @Gargron addressing the moderation issue outlined above.
Some bigger questions about how these systems are set-up, but at least someone is stepping forward and showing accountability:
Update: Good to see @Mastodon being responsive and I'm sure it was an innocent mistake, but these mistakes keep happening and they point to deeper issues with the approach to moderation over here that really need to be worked out. A lot of responsibility is left on the shoulders of volunteer mods. Things could be more transparent and less arbitrary.
I hope people take some of these concerns that have been surfacing seriously rather than just tell people to go find a different server or whatever
@llebrun
On the one hand, I don't know if that's actually considered a good instance or not.
On the other hand, we really need to call out instances that do this crap.
Has anyone got a list of servers rated according to their moderation history? I might have to look into this.

The bot is apparently actively being worked on by the owner in response to recent changes at the place where the data comes from
