If you're worried that this could be mistaken for nuclear launches, don't. A lot of the munitions launched so far were already dual-capable. And in practice, unless there's a massive launch towards EU capitals or the United States itself, none of the nuclear powers will be sitting at the football wondering whether to launch-on-warning. They'll always wait for it to land and then decide later. So at least that's off the table.

@luci I think you are very likely right.
Good news is that the hard drive was not the source of failure, so once I get the appropriate adapter cable I will be able to transfer all the data I need from it (I frequently back up my data anyway as is, so there's not a lot I need to account for)

@luci Since the computer is literally 12 years old and has been powered on for most of that time, I am preparing to replace it. This is more a last ditch effort to salvage a beloved possession then anything

@luci It's a desktop, and I have already tried every function key

@luci Hitting F2 does nothing. Neither does hitting F9. No beeps occur

So my computer seemingly won't boot. It goes into the HP loading screen and never seems to leave.
Can anyone give suggestions as to what might be going on? I have an HP Pavilion HPE from 2010 or so, running Ubuntu Linux

I’ve had a lot of people ask me recently why not stay on Twitter and fight.

The reason is because Musk controls the algorithm. He could ban you tomorrow, and he could also just deprioritize every one of your tweets so no one sees them.

You can’t fight and win when the opponent has complete control over the field of conflict.

US ‘politics’

‘Kanye West announces 2024 presidential bid - BBC News

‘West said his request for a running mate left the former president, who recently launched his own re-election campaign, "most perturbed".
In a video titled Mar-A-Lago Debrief, West claimed: "Trump started basically screaming at me at the table, telling me I'm going to lose. Has that ever worked for anyone in history?"’

“I’m not letting some billionaire take this platform away from me” says person providing free content and eyeballs for said billionaire. 🙃

@MeidasTouch That lawyer is insane. I guess that's the only kind of lawyer Trump can get after stiffing on legal fees as often as he has.

Since Mastodon saw its initial popularity circa 2017, I've noticed that most users and those reporting on it either don't think about the Fediverse as anything more than Mastodon, or treat its history as beginning with Eugen Rochko and the beginning of Mastodon. In fact, Mastodon is the latest in a long line of federated social networks, going at least back to Identi.ca, and though I wasn't around for all of it,I find this history pretty interesting. (Thread; boosts welcome!)

@amil_eoj To be fair, I'm still under the impression that Twitter will either go bankrupt or otherwise fail before Musk can do that much damage anywhere else.
I really, really hope I am not wrong in my prediction.

RT @costareports@twitter.com

Having tracked Fuentes for years, let me note this as a reporter: he is well-known inside the GOP. People can pretend otherwise but professionals who work in the party are highly aware of how his white supremacy and anti-Semitism influences some voters, esp on fringe platforms.

Some sort of concept drawing for some sort of space opera character. Don't know what this guy's deal is.

@DeanBaker13 @joshtpm @mmasnick

How about strengthening antitrust law along the lines of that which the current FTC head wants? To be fair, I'm still very iffy about the idea of redefining the law in that way myself, and IIRC Mike Masnick has been at least somewhat critical of it; nonetheless, it's *still* a far less drastic idea than altering Section 230.

(I'm going to repeat this next paragraph from my other post until you address it.)

You still haven't answered my other questions about larger sites being less affected, how such a DMCA-like system as you proposed would even work, or why using floods of *demonstrably* frivolous cases to solve problems is in any way a good idea.

@DeanBaker13 @joshtpm @mmasnick Imho that's an excessively cavalier attitude on your part. "These sites and comment sections and their content might get whacked, and there may well be a chilling effect as people overreact to takedown notices, but that's not a big problem" isn't a line of reasoning I'd be comfortable using.
