There are multiple variants of fediverse social media systems that are in the works and are API compatible with Mastodon.

It's implemented, but not automatic : you have to tap the icon (circled in yellow in my screenshot) to switch to remote view. As I understand it, it uses the public (non authenticated) API to fetch the thread directly from the server on which it originated. @apps
