One of the right wing's goals is to destroy public institutions of all kinds -- not just schools but also libraries, transit, and pretty much anything that can be "privatized" (a BS word that means sold off to financial profiteers who will gouge the public and degrade vital services.

@tolortslubor @StevenBeschloss I both fault my country for supporting this, and fault Russia for invading Ukraine at the whims of an aging dictator.
I consider the role of the latter worse than the role of the former (based primarily on the different levels of involvement) but Biden *really* should have kept his promise here, and this is a stain on our moral integrity.
We should be moral exemplars, not merely the lesser of two evils.

This is an interesting map on the centralization of cities. Italy shares a lot of similarities with Germany in that it was a bunch of smaller states that unified around the mid-19th century, and thanks to that they have a lot of high population cities, rather than one megacity.

I wish I had better news about Buffalo but the city is in a state of emergency. To summarize the overnight police scanner:
- Hundreds of people trapped in cars.
- Thousands without power and freezing in their homes for 30h+
- Everything is on fire - cars, houses, everything.
- Emergency crews are trying but they're stuck. Fire engines breaking down all over the place. The Nat'l guard showed up and got stuck, too.
- 7 people are confirmed dead.

Horrendous story of how a scholar’s work was lifted from his blog and published by another scholar as her own. For context, the blogger is highly respected and has made numerous contributions to manuscropt studies via his blog, which is his main publication platform. Among the worrying elements of this story: that blogs are not real publications, so contents can be used without attribution. It happens more often.

Thinking about Peter Thiel quietly and methodically killing Gawker over a period of years then having his, "Tell Cersei, I want her to know it was me" moment leaked.
Contrast that to the overt cruelty we see today. Greg Abbott puts migrants on buses to freezing temps on xmas eve and still wins elections by 11 pts.
Acts that should generate disgust instead trigger feelings of power, even as those celebrating Abbott literally lose grid power.
It's terrifying. How are we going to fix this?

I once read a story about how the Tuareg people of the Sahara improvised a vast sneakernet file sharing network using Bluetooth.
This was needed because there's not a whole lot of cellular networks over there. And some Tuareg are nomadic, so WiFi isn't an option either.
Some incredible music was shared this way. I think it's how Mdou Moctar for discovered.
@epistemophagy I agree with some of your points here, and I share your frustration to a considerable extent, but I am also not quite as worried about this scenario:
1. Twitter isn't viable anymore and it will be more apparent over time. Advertisers are not staying, the alternative money-raising mechanisms aren't working out, the regulators from the US and EU are circling, Musk continues to fire people without regard to what they do, and the number of tech issues at the site seems to be on the rise even as Musk guts staff and turns servers off. Journalists may not have (all) left yet, but it's only a matter of time before they have nothing to remain on there.
2. Most of the issues with onboarding are due to a lack of clarity in explanation and presentation (Join Mastodon is pretty narrow in the list of sites it features) more than actual difficulty, as well as certain prominent Twitter users being dismissive of attempts to leave. Some smaller, older instances can be very petty as well (don't get me started on the crap I have seen) which has affected one person I know who got banned from a smallee server; this has been an issue on Fedi since well before the current wave, and I suspect it is due to it being previously a refuge for people who didn't fit on mainstream social media for whatever reason. My suspicion is that this will change over time as different new parts of the Fediverse, Mastodon or otherwise, grow.
And I do suspect they will grow, based on several developments I have heard announced ...but more on that later. I think I need to get back to celebrating with my family. I will follow up on this later tonight.

Asylum is legal immigration.
There's no "port of entry" requirement.
There's no "visa" requirement.
There's no "first country" requirement.
You enter the United States, and you apply for asylum.
Because asylum is legal immigration. Period.
