@conradludgate Because not everybody is on Mastodon. The Fediverse consists of many servers, and also many software. There is Misskey, Pleroma, Friendica, and more other software that can connect to the Fediverse.
@Hyolobrika@mstdn.io Agreed!
For some context: Musk in his Twitter post (cited in the article I linked) equated American free speech laws with the principle of free speech and said that a site should not moderate beyond that law. Instead of pointing the problems with this naïve stance out, the reporter asserts that hate speech is not free speech under US law.
In short, she took Musk's shitty (and actually feigned) take on free speech and responded to it with a different bad free speech take.
From an article on TechChrunch. I despise both Musk and Twitter and expect the former to drive the latter straight into the ground through sheer incompetence, but it is delicious seeing people throwing around bad free speech takes, especially when they are journalists who really should have known better.

Hello, I joined Mastodon to engage, share and learn. My Twitter handle is @DeepGreenDesign. I have used the Twitter platform to engage on science, climate, green design and grow a network of people.
Let's connect and help grow this community!

@atomicpoet @JoYo Thanks. I got her to look at democracy.town instead.
A federal district court ruled last month that FOSTA does not violate the First Amendment. Our clients disagree and so do we, which is why they're appealing. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2022/04/plaintiffs-press-appeals-court-rule-fosta-violates-first-amendment
I don’t think #ElonMusk has bad interests in mind when he decided to buy #Twitter
I do believe he *wants* to protect free speech and democracy.
However
- Power corrupts
- Twitter can still be censored. Mastodon can’t be completely censored.
#Mastodon is a better choice for free speech, democracy, and prosperity.
Actual #feditip for the new people
No one will get mad at you for muting people or instances that make you uncomfortable, you don't need a reason
I have several instances muted purely because I don't like their vibe or their name
@atomicpoet I think a total migration to the Fediverse is unlikely, but a significant increase in the size of the Fediverse isn't.
I do think a Twitter collapse at some point is likely. Musk couldn't run a small forum without running it into the ground.
@JoYo @atomicpoet Thanks! I will recommend it to her! It seems like an instance she will really enjoy!
@JoYo @atomicpoet Got it.
I may be able to recommend her to an actual Fediverse instance. Is democracy.town recommended?
@JoYo @atomicpoet Can someone fill me in on the details here? My mother is intending to join counter.social and I don't think she knows about its issues.
MEMO: CounterSocial is not a member of the Fediverse. What's more they lock features behind a pay wall, and claim (wrongly!) that when other Fediverse instances defederate with yours, they're breaking the AGPL. https://countersocial.documize.com/s/c30dhakp0nhtab60utag/countersocial-blog/d/c5piofvuaqg133k3is90/the-history-of-countersocial-and-mastodon
@atomicpoet My mother has been thinking of joining CounterSocial, and while I was able to dig up some older convos from 2017, I lack context and background knowledge to understand them fully.
Are there any other sources you would advise I show her?
