@konomikitten
I would personally block the offending accounts if possible and email staff@mastodon.online
@gled @nivex Got it. Thanks for the advice!
Most of the rumors I have heard regarding Fediblock involve people character-assassinating others with false accusations and quote-mined statements. I've fortunately never had it happen in my presence or to myself.
I also recall a huge fracas from years ago where people were harassing server owners on instances other than their own in an attempt to force them to block instances. If my memory is correct this even happened to the developer of Fedilab and involved demands to block Gab, despite Gab having defederated some time before that point. I don't support Gab, and never have, but this kind of stuff always struck me as extremely juvenile even when Gab was still reachable.
Personally if I were an admin and a person tried the "block this other person/instance or I will block/harass/slander you" crap on me, I would block the person making that threat without hesitation.
@mathlover @nivex there may be a couple instances doing that manually, but can't remember a single example where it was a problem, at least in my experience.
fediblock is usually a good tag to follow iirc from my admin days since it would give early warning of instances to block before the cesspool arrives to my server... not too much an issue though as a single user instance, again following just a subset of good folks helps maintaining a decent feed and I don't get randoms from other people...
@mathlover @nivex no reason to, unless you spam of course :D
I've been on single user instances since 2019 iirc ? no issues at all, except maybe the discoverability of new profiles since my federated timeline is just me... but I follow enough interesting folks that they boost new people in my feed anyway...
@nivex I'll look into this as well!
@nivex Not impossible. I've flirted with the idea of starting a Fediverse instance, and if I did it probably wouldn't be Mastodon.
I'm currently leaning towards Pleroma due to lower overhead and Markdown support, but other suggestions are welcome.
My tldr; for new Mastodon users:
Toots = Tweets
Boosts = Retweets
Stars = Hearts
Home feed is who you follow (think Twitter).
Local feed is everyone on your instance (i.e. server)
Federated is posts from people on *other* instances followed by at least one person on *your* instance.
You don't have to use Local or Federated, but they can be helpful for finding people to follow.
You can follow/interact with anyone on any instance by using their full handle:

VPNs are an important tool for protecting privacy, and running one isn't illegal even if some users infringe copyright, EFF's @mitchstoltz tells Wired. https://www.wired.com/story/hollywood-piracy-vpn-lawsuits/
@alex Looks like he's really going to lean into Truth Social for now.
Oh well. Let him and his supporters have their own little echo chamber.

You can search for instance names & descriptions, there's also a list, including statistics.

@mcc Ah. I will read that book at some point. I generally tend to separate art from artist anyway, so even if those allegations are true, it will probably just mean that I get the books via other means that don't give money to the author, like buying a used paperback copy.
@mcc I'll probably get around to reading it. I like Exurb1a's philosophical statements and art.
Do you have any information on the allegations against Exurb1a and whether they are true or not?
