We’re Probably Going to Fuck This Up
@couts If it's any comfort, I've been here for years and so far the average new user I've interacted with during this wave has been quite pleasant.

"Musk’s new legal department is also apparently asking engineers to “self-certify” compliance with FTC rules and other privacy laws."
If you know people working at Twitter, you need to tell them to resign rather than do this. That company is asking you to absorb the institution's liability, and the muskrat will fuck you without hesitation if you allow the possibility of that happening to exist.
@taylorlorenz It feels somehow cosy reading this from a distance, rather than on twitter itself. Like being inside, warm & dry, watching the rain lashing the window outside
@taylorlorenz I wonder if Musk will make the world record for fastest time taking a company from publicly traded to bankruptcy...
Interesting thought by @riskybusiness on his latest podcast: what would happen if someone like Google set up their own Mastodon instance, and it became like the Gmail of Mastodon.
I recognize that a lot of people who have been around would have concerns, but... it's the kind of thing that could happen.
We never did a proper #introduction, did we? 😲
Hi Fediverse, we're Thunderbird, an #opensource #email client available for free on Linux, macOS and Windows. (And coming next year to Android. FINALLY, right?)
You can use Thunderbird for managing an unlimited number of mail accounts, calendars, newsgroup accounts, and RSS feeds. You can also chat using your @matrix account.

Nice to meet you 📩
@chris I cut Twitter for good a few days ago. I feel better already.
I've been a heavy Discord chatter since 2019, so Twitter was always something I did more out of a weird compulsion than for fun. When I first cut Twitter out in April (via intentionally getting my account locked by insulting Trump Jr.) I felt a lot happier and calmer overall.
In all honesty twitter is probably the least conducive site to discussion I have ever seen.
They're beginning to figure out the mathematics of rogue waves: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/article/mathematicians-may-soon-be-able-to-predict-enormous-rogue-waves
Why do I bring up *your* personal data in the context of a potential Twitter paywall?
Because Elon Musk has made blatant what has, until now, been hush-hush: that everything you contribute to Big Social is valuable.
It's not just your tweets, but also:
1. The time you spend on site
2. Your search queries
3. Your social sentiment
4. Your interests
5. Your contacts and relationships
You put in the work, gave Twitter that data—and now they're going to monetize all of it to the very last drop.
@fluepke No wonder robots call them "meatbags" with such condescension.
I little bit prouder today of my institution. MIT is hosting its own #mastodon server

See you there soon

@NickHubert
I get that, although to be really honest the people I truly feel bad for in this mess are Twitter employees. On the other hand, Musk shooting himself in the foot over and over again is absolutely hilarious and I do not feel bad for him in the slightest.
There is a very small minority of Twitter users I don't feel bad for (*cough* Dave Troy *cough*), but crazy people aside, a huge number of users would be displaced by this, including those in more niche groups like furry artists, who would probably need to search a bit harder then others to find new homes online. On the other hand, I have seen major issues with Twitter's site as implemented that affect discourse, and a lot of these issues are resolved in the Fediverse.
In short, like many things in life, it's a mix of comedy and tragedy. In my humble opinion, one should laugh at the funny parts while crying at the sad parts.
A lot of snarky people on #Twitter are mocking people migrating to mastodon, which I find funny because I remember when Twitter first came out and it was mocked heavily until people got famous and built entire careers from it. Then of course it became *Very Important*. Entire books written on how to conquer it! (To be clear though, I don’t really want that arc for mastodon, because I think we need a change from the old model…)
I just wrote about Elon Musk and Twitter
