@Sebastian
I think they mentioned having server discovery turned off for some time.
@mastodonusercount

@rsf92 @mastodonusercount Not sure. This could be an issue on instance.social, or it could be the maintainer of the bot freaking out

That's not what I have heard from the owner today, but feel free to provide a source.

It’s about time we showed up here.

It would not surprise me if Musk thinks the blue checkmark can *replace* advertisers.

Whom do I know at the US Digital Service? It would be good to have a mastodon.gov instance, as a way to verify that toots are actually coming from US government agencies. (Other countries should change the domain suffix appropriately…)

@astrid @mastodonusercount @justinesherry basically, there was an issue with instances.social, the graph now shows a number of servers that looks like that on instances.social/list/old - except that includes everything compatible with the mastodon API which includes things like pleroma/akkoma and pixelfed

Like I was telling a friend, seeing folks scrambling for whatever social media life raft they can find, and it's painful to watch.

At first #mastodon was pushed, and many moved over, but for the rest, "iT'S ToO CoMpLiCaTeD".

So, yesterday #cohost was the new hotness.

Today it's #hive.

Tomorrow...?

Going from one ruined, disgraced centralized service over to ANOTHER centralized service so we can do this dance all over again.

Worse, they aren't actually vetting the sites. Zero thought goes into what these fly-by-night opportunity vultures are actually like. Who's behind them? How long they can realistically stay up? Any 4-bit asshat can boot up a pretty Twitter-clone.

At least with #Mastodon if the guy running your server turns out to be an asshole, you can just hit the bricks and move elsewhere. Good luck doing that with whatever flavor of the day you flocked over.

The beast will still be here, at least, when the next apocalypse happens

@QuantumAspect @mastodonusercount The operator of instances.social just fixed instance discovery earlier today. These are users that have been on for a while but haven't been tracked before.

@mastodonusercount @TheKinrar I take it that instance discovery is not done all at once, but is a somewhat slow process.

@aladyjewel My parents have been using the same TV for quite a while now. I cringe at what will happen if they have to go out and get one of those new "smart TVs".

@mastodonusercount It seems instances.social is better at picking up new users in general now...

@Suzyanalyst1 From what I can tell, most if not all of these people went to less recommendable instances (including certain older but smaller instances which have a reputation for doing rather arbitrary things), and while having this happen is relatively rare, it is possible to avoid this by vetting the instance before you join it. (I joined years ago and did very much put thought into the choice.)

*That being said*, it is indeed not a good look. To counter this, I think instances that do stuff like that should be called out, and conversely, instances that *don't* should be given positive attention and recommended widely.

birdsite, content moderation, elon, etc.

Wrote up something explaining just why Elon's latest actions on Twitter were so problematic. It's not so much the final decisions (even as those are bad), but the process that shows his lack of concern about anything other than himself. That's no way to do content moderation.
