There are so many (so so so many!) things I could have included here, but it seems notable that not only is Elon Musk jumping around the content moderation learning curve... he doesn't actually seem to be learning anything. https://www.techdirt.com/2022/12/01/elon-musk-continues-along-the-content-moderation-learning-curve-but-doesnt-seem-to-be-learning-a-damn-thing/
EXCLUSIVE: Elon Musk has used Twitter polls to justify moves such as reinstating Trump’s account, but employees tell Rolling Stone the social network’s surveys are magnets for bots. They’re literally designed to be spammed and gamed. https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/elon-musk-twitter-polls-are-bot-driven-bullsht-1234639288/

Looks like they're staying here and setting up a Post account in the meantime

Folks like @ajroach42 bring up a good point.
It isn't just that loading all Internet traffic to port 80 resulted in centralization of the Internet.
It's that we're also still using IPv4 with a NAT. And then a NAT with a NAT with a NAT.
Meanwhile, companies like Apple get entire /8 blocks of IPv4 addresses all to themselves!
For context one /8 block contains 16,777,216 addresses.
Why does Apple get so many IP addresses allocated to them?
I mean I know why—that doesn't mean it's right!
Unbelievable. Co-founder of @ceprdc, @DeanBaker13 got banned from Twitter. Dean is a progressive economist and has, to my knowledge, an entirely unobjectionable Twitter presence. But he made fun of Musk. An absolutely grotesque abuse of power and suppression of actual free speech.
@austinc
Holy crap.

Auf Hive kann man nicht nur die DMs anderer (auch gelöschte) lesen, sondern sogar die Postings anderer Nutzer berichtigen, falls diese mal Fehler gemacht haben sollten.
Ist das nicht geil?
2. The Fediverse services are considerably less aggressive in gather data from users. Yes, there's still some important data (login credentials, emails) that can be a significant issue, but it's nothing compared to the amount of data harvested by the Big Tech socials and their wannabe emulators.
I am striking today alongside 70,000 staff at 150 universities. We join already striking rail, mail and civil servants. Nurses have voted to strike for the first time ever. Barristers, ambulance paramedics, teachers and civil servants will also be striking or balloting to strike before xmas. We can expect over a million workers on strike in the new year. https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/newslondon/uk-strikes-2022-which-services-and-sectors-are-striking-or-threatening-to-strike/ar-AA13Y2bh #ucurising #unite #ukstrikes #industrialAction #inflation #CostOfLivingCrisis #nurses #teachers

I'm beside myself.
Someone created a finger-to-WordPress gateway.
Remember Macstodon, the Mastodon client for Classic Mac OS?
This is even nerdier than that.
The thing I miss most about #science isn't doing it, it's being able to dream collaboratively.
I really miss being around other nerds who are just as happy as I am to jump into flights of speculative fancy together and bat around ideas until maybe a good one comes out that can be followed up on and tested.
Surely there are other places to find this kind of thing. It's just that for the past 7 years (scary) science was this for me, so now is the first time I have to seek it out actively.
The EU, UK, and various states are pushing "protect the children!" laws that will effectively mandate age verification technologies for most websites.
Turns out the French data protection agency (which doesn't mess around) has said that all existing age verification technologies violate people's privacy...
@mmasnick This reminds me of many incidents when I went to school in the NYS Capital region.
