COVID wastewater levels in Ottawa, Canada have been relatively flat the past week but you can see they have never gone back down to low levels since Omicron BA.1 hit a year ago and the new "baseline" is quite elevated showing there is a still a significant amount of COVID circulating in the community. 9/

Several admins have seen these instances being involved in some nasty attacks: They use thousands of subdomains of activitypub-troll [.]cf to overwhelm instances with Mastodon server calls.
An odd Fediverse-specific type of denial of service attack.

For those saying "stay and fight" on Twitter, that only applies when the battlefield is NOT owned and controlled by the person you're fighting. In this case you're fighting a proverbial nuke that will just explode at will whenever you get out of line. BUT by staying and engaging on turdsite, you're feeding the Muskrat and his Ratzis an enemy they have the upper hand on. Deprive them of that and they've got NOTHING.

I'm old enough to remember that respecting and defending the Constitution was the most basic expectation of every citizen, let alone someone running for president. Even after everything we've been through, the idea that Republicans will stick with a man who flagrantly demands the Constitution be discarded to install him into office: Infuriating.

On Dec 2, 1859, Abolitionist John Brown was the first American ever executed for treason. The second ever executed for treason was Aaron Dwight Stevens (March 15, 1831 – March 16, 1860).
Their crimes? Attempting to free the enslaved. The first Americans executed for treason was for the crime of freeing the enslaved.
Legality is not always a measure of justice & morality, but a measure of power. This was only two life spans ago.
May we learn from these atrocities & uphold justice forever.

Unpopular opinion: we should normalize black people coming to Mastodon, being safe and speaking their minds.
They might talk about internal discomfort and biases we might hold.
It's not their responsibility to educate us. It's our responsibility to create a place where black people are accepted.
I was looking at the news this morning and I think it's the perfect time to bring this up.

The incoming GOP majority is going to try and discredit the work of the Jan. 6 Committee. Remember the courage of honorable conservatives like Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger when the extremists begin their assault. They had nothing to gain by opposing their party and Trump, and everything to lose. But they stood up anyway for the rule of law and for democracy.

Indeed, if the existence of human power over others were reduced or even eliminated through the creation of fairer and better systems, we would be able to resolve most problems arising from broken people in the first place, and the world would be far better off as a result.
It is nonetheless true that, were all the broken people to one day wake up fixed, the world would be a still better place for it. The fact that this can't happen, and very possibly can never happen, is a tragedy, and even if its immutability makes it invisible to many, that does not prevent me from feeling sad about that fact.

@mathlover The sorrow is not that they exist. People that broken exist in legion. The sorrow is that some of them are in power. And people in power over others, that is what is wrong. Anyone who would be a good leader could tell you: i do not want to be a leader.

I often fantasize about a world in which we could somehow, say, force narcissists to deeply, honestly contemplate their own selves (something narcissists pathologically don't do) and by that affect a cure in at least a good chunk of cases.
It's impossible at this point, and for all I know may never be possible. I'm not even sure if it would be ethical even if we could do it. Violence may need to be an option, albeit a sparingly used one, for those cases beyond help. But even if it is necessary for the Putins and Xi Jinpings of now and forever to be forcefully restrained, I still acknowledge the sorrow I feels at the fact that people that broken exist.

I have autism spectrum disorder and so does my sister, and I have seen so many people in my position treated as if they aren't at any disadvantage simply because we aren't visibly disabled. I can't stress enough how much this message needs to be more widely known.

I think the Republican Party is in line for an electoral winter. If they don't get rid of Trump in some way at some point it will be a Fimbulwinter for them.
The recent midterms have shown this stuff doesn't win elections. The problem for the rest of the GOP leadership is growing enough of a brain and maybe even a spine to get out from under Trump's complete influence.
