Well, the good news is that protests in most of the Northeast and Midwest have died down.
The bad news is that COVID is surging everywhere else and all Trump's doing in response is being a real-life troll: he's literally stirring up everyone in the US in some way.

It is to Biden's credit that he has mostly kept his mouth shut, been straightforward and non-inflammatory when he has said anything, supers supported masks, social distancing, and fixing the issues that led to the protests while avoiding the inane hashtag politics of the moment such as police defunding and abolition, and generally just let Trump hang himself on his own rope.

Whatever you think of Biden (I personally am optimistic about his administration) Trump is immeasurably worse and it is paramount that Trump be ousted in the next election. Biden's platform at the moment is left enough to get us back on track as a nation; if that's not enough, there's 2024 to look forward to—if we get Trump out first!!

I take it not having a trending list on Qoto was a conscious design choice. Looking at the trending now, it seems to have been a good one.

I finally announced my parting from Twitter. With the help of my mother I shall do so; in return I am helping her quit Facebook, Twitter, CNN, and the coronavirus tracker site she has determined she consults too often.

My parting shot on Twitter was posting this meme on 40 trending tweets tagged and (I chose the ones about masks and ignored the unrelated BLM ones). I am not looking back.

Why are about half the Swedes I talk to on the Internet convinced their government's handling COVID-19 well, despite having more deaths per million than each of Sweden's neighbors *and* the United States?!?!

Because the US military would totally go out of its way to hunt down and shoot any person who made a mean Twitter comment about them, especially one that nobody noticed written by a random, anonymous US citizen wearing bunny ears in his profile pic and quite possibly living long-term in his mother's basement. /s

This is the most paranoid take on criticising the US military I've ever seen. Does the Guinness Book of World Records take submissions for this category? If so I suspect this submission ... would not even be in the competition because there's probably a hundred dumber ones out there already.

So removed a massive animated passion project
for unspecified TOS violations. The uploader cannot appeal, and reuploading gives a TOS violation midway.
This is just a nightmare from a novel at this point.

yesterday: "man, I wonder how much of the corona relief VAT cut will actually go to consumers. it might not be much."

today: hard discounters frantically putting up "we are passing the full VAT cut to consumers" signs

It's clear that you can’t count on large tech companies to secure data sufficiently. The more important point is that passwords do not offer sufficient security. Most experts agree that it is time for a radical change. But how? A few solutions exist!

The Chinese government just made its oppressive domination over Hong Kong indisputable.

A new law suggests that taking part in the protests could be interpreted as a crime with a maximum penalty of life in prison. Also, anyone suspected of breaking the law can be put under (more) surveillance.

And what if you want to flee the country, because you don't enjoy being a 1984 character? The "crime of secession" has a maximum penalty of—you guessed it—life in prison.

And may the odds be ever in your favour...

Summary of the security law:

I think I’ve started mentally tuning out online petitions. I know their reasoning, but too many things have happened which seem to exponentially generate more of them and I just don’t have the capacity to register the details of each one anymore

Sometimes I think with nostalgia about my discovery of Mastodon, and how deeply immersed I quickly became. Oh, that amazing Toots, the wonderful people, the creativity. Alas, sitting in one spot reading and typing isn't the best activity for an optimal me, so instead of getting immersed in social media of any kind (or even online research), I generally avoid it. I like to think about the virtual encounters I've had over the years, wonder about the people and sometimes even check to see what's up

If a does not sway you with a tortured argument that a given person is a rapist, a block is their best response. It's not like trolls have class, after all...
