So there is a site out called #countersocial and some people I know are thinking of joining it. Apparently it started as a #Mastodon instance but left due to issues involving negative feedback for blocking all users from 7 specific countries. The owner claims the "the lead developer [of Mastodon]" "decided to slur, slander, libel and basically cause as much trouble with us to his ‘community’ at large."
Can anyone give me any insight into this?
As an alternative to FediTips, you might want to also check out @noelle's "Increasingly Less-Brief Guide to Mastodon":

It's got slightly different takes on many issues, but hopefully seeing a different perspective will give you a fuller understanding of how Mastodon works.
A report by the Canadian research centre the Citizen Lab reveals a list of 65 people linked to the Catalan independence movement, who were spied on through the state-of-the-art spyware program Pegasus, and a second system called Candiru. These are programs that only governments have access to, as they are designed to fight organized crime and terrorism, and there is "strong circumstantial evidence" that the Spanish authorities were responsible for this espionage.

The most daunting thing for me about joining Mastodon/Fediverse was picking an instance.
Having joined one, a RL metaphor emerges for me: "it's like picking an apartment building."
You need to evaluate the management. Do they respect tenant rights? Is the desk clerk skeevy?
Do you want to live in a big impersonal complex? Or a little boarding house, where people share a lot and have house parties? You can even be a "home owner" and run your own instance (pay the bills, fix the plumbing).
Hello!
I'm tired of gushing about Mastodon a thousand times in a thousand places, so I wrote a post to summarize some info about it for folks who are *possibly* interested.
https://blog.mjb.im/mastodon-and-the-fediverse
It covers the what/why/how as well as clearing up some misconceptions and whatnot.
It is meant to be educational and informative about what the heck "Mastodon" and "the Fediverse" is. If you know someone who might be interested, consider sending this their way!
Hope this helps!
Hi! mastodon.social is being slow right now, as far as I can tell because there's twice as many people using it at the same time as ever have; I'm working on making it go fast again, but in the meantime, do remember to invite people to joinmastodon.org instead of directly to mastodon.social. People don't have to be on the same server to follow you! Thanks!
There will be a downtime of 2 hours, likely later today, as we upgrade to a larger server. #QOTO #Mastoadmin

Ok, we found the problem. Upgrading all servers now to fix it.
I'm really starting to think that anything short of a WW2-scale government-led mobilisation effort to fight climate change is just a bit of window dressing. Individual actions like flying less or going vegan, or corporate actions like carbon offsetting are just not going to scale fast enough and are probably just a distraction from meaningful change. The technology is there and the transition will (probably) happen eventually at this point, we just need the political action to drastically reduce the timeframe.

Hey @elonmusk if you care about free speech on twitter then make them to join the fediverse (https://www.w3.org/TR/2018/REC-activitypub-20180123) so that people can use any client e.g. https://fediverse.party to use it from decentralized network.
