I'm pretty sure I had my first Thoughts about moderation philosophy when I got banned from a forum on Prodigy due to trolling at age 11.

I actually remember being fairly shocked at the entire concept that I could be banned and have zero recourse! it was unsettling.

this also kiiinda makes perfect sense for me too though, because the mutability of information is a Deep Concept for me, it played a starring role in the first dawning of my awareness of mortality at age 5.

@shortwavesurfer2009 oh, nice, it's working again. For the longest time it kept throwing API errors so I stopped using it. Wonder how long until it gets nerfed again.

As recently as a few days ago I could still go to a person's direct URL on birdsite and read their posts. This was useful, if a bit cumbersome, for the handful of people I still wanted to hear from. As of this morning I get a big ol' "You must log in" pop up after scrolling for a short while.

So, I just learned something new. The #fediverse is not just connected #mastodon instances, but actually consists of several different software platforms, all connecting via the same federating protocol! I had seen references to things like #peertube and #nextcloud, but assumed they were different platforms running on different protocols, but it turns out they're all part of the same fediverse, unified by #ActivityPub. Amazing!

Hi @freemo it's Friday and, as you requested, I remind you that #QOTO lacks a #Privacy policy.

Please, do not under-estimate the issue as many QOTO's users are European citizens and, as far as I can see here https://dns-lookup.com/qoto.org several services from the US are connected (DNS from Amazon, and mail from Google) while using QOTO.

Data storage, as far as I can see https://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx?action=ptr%3a51.178.91.220&run=toolpage is still in OVH, but I'd guess that you need an explicit consent for these stuff anyway.

@trinsec @freemo @cy@mstdn.io two of the reasons why qoto is one of my favorite instances is the science focus and the 65,000+ character limit.

Random thought: Could markdown support in #Mastodon be a good thing?

For those of you who did not know otherwise because Mastodon is your only social media outlet, I and Krissy have bought a church and are refurbishing it. Here is some of the new framing for the balconies. Also, no, we're not starting a cult. Why does everyone assume that?

My tldr; for new Mastodon users:

Toots = Tweets
Boosts = Retweets
Stars = Hearts

Home feed is who you follow (think Twitter).

Local feed is everyone on your instance (i.e. server)

Federated is posts from people on *other* instances followed by at least one person on *your* instance.

You don't have to use Local or Federated, but they can be helpful for finding people to follow.

You can follow/interact with anyone on any instance by using their full handle:

@username@instancename
