Back in 2010 #twitter launched their “t.co” link shortened. And I thought at the time how profoundly terrible that is. If the database and/or ability to look up t.co links ever changed, we would literally lose information. We will no longer know what URL was tweeted. It burns a huge hunk of internet history to the ground if we lose that. It was vain and shortsighted and stupid. Now in 2022, I wonder how many months we have left when we can resolve those links. And what happens to collective internet history when they’re done?
In another funny twist, what about trials or legal matters that hinge on the content of a tweet? And suddenly you can’t get the content of that tweet? Or where did that link point to?
Nobody saw this coming except for all of us who saw this coming.
Twitter's "get a copy of your data" service isn't working
So my mother was waiting to deactivate her Twitter account because she was waiting for Twitter to fulfill her request for a copy of her data. She made the request a few days ago, and today she finally got the email saying that her data was ready for download. When she clicked to download her data, she got a message saying "This feature is no longer available".
At this point she went ahead and deactivated her account.
"Musk’s new legal department is also apparently asking engineers to “self-certify” compliance with FTC rules and other privacy laws."
If you know people working at Twitter, you need to tell them to resign rather than do this. That company is asking you to absorb the institution's liability, and the muskrat will fuck you without hesitation if you allow the possibility of that happening to exist.
@taylorlorenz It feels somehow cosy reading this from a distance, rather than on twitter itself. Like being inside, warm & dry, watching the rain lashing the window outside
Interesting thought by @riskybusiness on his latest podcast: what would happen if someone like Google set up their own Mastodon instance, and it became like the Gmail of Mastodon.
I recognize that a lot of people who have been around would have concerns, but... it's the kind of thing that could happen.
We never did a proper #introduction, did we? 😲

Why do I bring up *your* personal data in the context of a potential Twitter paywall?
Because Elon Musk has made blatant what has, until now, been hush-hush: that everything you contribute to Big Social is valuable.
It's not just your tweets, but also:
1. The time you spend on site
2. Your search queries
3. Your social sentiment
4. Your interests
5. Your contacts and relationships
You put in the work, gave Twitter that data—and now they're going to monetize all of it to the very last drop.
I little bit prouder today of my institution. MIT is hosting its own #mastodon server
mastodon.mit.edu
See you there soon

A lot of snarky people on #Twitter are mocking people migrating to mastodon, which I find funny because I remember when Twitter first came out and it was mocked heavily until people got famous and built entire careers from it. Then of course it became *Very Important*. Entire books written on how to conquer it! (To be clear though, I don’t really want that arc for mastodon, because I think we need a change from the old model…)
I just wrote about Elon Musk and Twitter

A colleague of mine at the @nytimes has written this explainer of Mastodon, noting that Elon Musk has tweeted and deleted three derogatory posts about it today. Gift link. I spoke to someone from a very large US gov org over the weekend and they are looking into standing up a #Mastodon instance. Would be unusual to see them move so quickly but there are several good reasons to do so. No idea if it will happen but at least its on the radar. Interesting times.
