This thread is extremely disturbing. Apparently a former Army officer who resigned after taking part in the Jan 6 insurrection is indirectly claiming credit for an attack on critical infrastructure, with the goal of curring power to a drag show.
These people are deranged and dangerous.
This story from the New York Times is not reassuring:
"In a brief telephone interview early Sunday, Richard Maness, the chief deputy of the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, called the situation 'alarming' but said he could not provide more information.
“'We’re really right in the middle of this thing,' he said. 'I’ve got detectives spread out all over our county.'”
You are right. Let's help it along.
Sick of #twitter ?
Just go to the Playstore, search for Twitter. Don't reinstall it, but rate it with one star. Then select the three dots in the top right, with 'Flag As Inappropriate'. The next screen asks why you think it is inappropriate. Mark it as 'Contains Hate Speech', and submit.
Google does take these reports seriously. It's worth the effort.
As a historian I am well aware that every historical moment is sui generis: no other identical combination of people, politics, technology, economy, education, etc. has ever or will ever exist in any one place.
But it is striking how so many problems of so many people in so many societies at so many times come down to too much power and money in the hands of the few.
I celebrate that #Taiwan held a free and fair election where people had the day off to vote, votes were openly and efficiently counted, and losing candidates admitted defeat without questioning the results.
Truly a democratic system countries around the world can learn from.
@atomicpoet You might want to consider the United Federation of Instances as an interesting new dynamic in this conversation
#introduction I am a public historian and archaeologist at Salem State University, exploring material life in the 17th century Atlantic World, mostly from the perspective on non-Puritan northern New England. I also write about #witchcraft and #countermagic in #Salem and elsewhere. I am a former museum director, dean, and vice provost. Always wondered what it was like to be part of a Great Migration, now I get to find out, with thanks to @lizcovart @jmadelman & @kawulf #histodons
@tchambers @blaine My Bundesland (=state) Baden-Württemberg https://bawü.social/directory is not open for everyone, but it isn't state entities only either. Universities, Student association, libraries and other organizations are on that instance. There is a large range, what the state government and the federal government can build besides a press release hub with comment functions.
Scientists discover the first evidence that #marine conservation helps to reduce #climate change.
Marine protected areas act as a safeguard for oceans, seas, and estuaries. A group of experts describes how marine protected areas support ecological and social adaptation to #climatechange and help in the sequestration of carbon in a study that was recently published in the journal One Earth.

My career as a disabled artist who makes art about my experiences as a disabled trans person can be summed up via an excerpt from the last grant rejection letter I received:
“…while the members of the selection panel felt your art was evocative, accomplished, and beautiful, we collectively felt the subject matter of disability would disturb and upset art patrons. Your work was ultimately rejected because we felt it wouldn’t resonate with the public.”
…My reality.
The fact that for 4 years this anti-American psycho narcisist had the launch codes to their nuclear arsenal is probably the most terrifying thought possible. #Trump
Elon (Twitter) has been recommending newly restored account of neo-Nazi (Anglin) to everyday users - Elon is now Twitter. So I think it's fair to consider every Twitter recommendation to be a recommendation from Elon. - https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/12/03/twitter-antisemitism-violence-jan-6/
Cardea, our little black fox of a dog, died in her sleep last night. She was 14+, had been with us since she was 9 weeks. We collected her at Christmas she has gone to sleep close to Christmas. She is our last dog. We have no more now. Samson went on ahead of her a few months ago. I feel rather sick and shaken, especially as we were not at home to be with her for her last breath. Here she is smelling the almond blossoms. Rest in peace, little girl.
chatcontrol propaganda factcheck
Recently the European Commission published a short article which is basically blatant propaganda for #chatcontrol. Almost every sentence is wrong or misleading in some way. I wrote a blog post detailing what's wrong with their article: https://maxim.tips/chatcontrol-lies/
The original article by the Commission (also linked & fully cited in the blog post): https://home-affairs.ec.europa.eu/news/detection-systems-online-child-sexual-abuse-are-reliable-and-save-lives-2022-12-01_en
