I rarely saw journalists use quote tweets. And many journalists were on twitter but not actually on twitter.

Their empoyers rely on the public to quote tweet articles - ie doing the marketing for free. Many people did do responding to the click-bait headings; rarely reading the articles. Quote tweeting media fed people's rage, anxiety, distrust, and clout-chasing. And because media/journalists rarely monitor quote tweets or replies, there were threads full of racism, bigotry, abuse, trolling, harmful sealioning, and more.

Speaking as a freelance writer with bylines, who was too plugged into twitter: media organisations & journalists now have an opportunity to adopt more ethical, people-focused communication. And leave the bad practices behind.

So, with the Fediverse being all open source and all, someone could conceivably create a widget that shows how many times you've tooted, displayed as a rolling mechanical counter: the mastodometer.

There is history here. A message board called Kiwi Farms developed search tools for the fediverse with the stated intent of finding and harassing LGBT people. Prior to the twitter migration it was probably the most impactful thing to occur in the fediverse. Any instance found to be using Kiwi Farms indexing tools was quickly and aggressively defederated and even instances that federated with those instances were targeted. (Full disclosure: the instance this account uses Qoto.org falls into the latter category and is still on a lot of default block lists)

I'm not saying it will never happen. The project is open source and if there is enough demand someone will write the code. Given the recent history, I would not expect the large legacy instances to change in the near future.

@mepurfield @actuallyautistic unfortunately a lot of those accounts are either from parents of autistic children or from people related or associated to hate groups such as Autism Speaks. I follow many autistic activists on the birdsite who are like you describe. I wish they'd come over to Mastodon!
