I wrote a rebuttal to a guy whose nonsense pissed me off just a little too much.

Reminder that #Mastodon and most of the #fediverse is a #nonprofit initiative that is dependent on us, the #users for its sustenance and survival. Please consider donating to the project that you use, and/or the #instance (the server) that you've signed up on. Whether it is a #matrix , #pixelfed , #lemmy , or any other microblogging project such as #pleroma. Most admins won't ever sell your data and have made this community for all of us.
We have been informed of an apparently targeted attack via a Google ad, trying to lure people looking for GIMP to a malicious download.
See https://www.reddit.com/r/GIMP/comments/ygbr4o/dangerous_google_ad_disguising_itself_as/
The users are taken to a site that has copied the look of https://gimp.org, but the downloads are different.
The GIMP team does not make use of ads on Google or elsewhere.

@mmasnick Thoughts on this article? My impression is it's crap, but I need to know what you think of it

Hello new people! 👋
I run a human-curated directory of interesting accounts to follow on here:
Do you have an account that posts a lot about a particular topic? Would you like to be listed in the directory?
If so, reply or @ me or send me a DM and let me know!
(The site only went live a few days ago so some topics are less populated than others, but this is why I am working on expanding it!)
Boosts appreciated
So Musk is laying off people *today* at Twitter to try to get them out before Tuesday when many of them have huge bonuses scheduled.
Except... California requires 60 days notice for such layoffs, and he's going to get destroyed in court. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/29/technology/twitter-layoffs-musk-jobs.html
There is a Nov. 1st vesting at Twitter. By announcing a start mass layoffs, Musk is trying to avoid employees this portion of their compensation. This is because he’s a scumbag.
Mass layoffs without notice are illegal, btw. He obviously doesn’t gad but this will be a lawsuit.
How to migrate from one Mastodon server to another without losing followers:
1. Sign up on new server
2. On NEW server: Go to Account -> Moving FROM another account
3. Enter old account's handle
4. On OLD server: Go to Account -> Moving TO another account
5. Enter new account's handle and submit
H1: There are distinct pulses of Twitter-to-Mastodon migration driven by events in Twitter’s history.
H2: Later cohorts of users will have lower familiarity + commitment to FOSS values + projects than earlier cohorts.
H3: New users will default to joining a general instance first and then micro-migrate to a more specific instance later.
H4: Greater circulation of folk documentation for using Fediverse affordances will attract and retain more new user activity.
Basically, news orgs will need to break the habit of reporting stuff that happens on Twitter as news.
If enough of them manage to do so, that would actually be a real improvement: they would have to go back to hunting news closer to its source, rather than just waiting to have it spoon-fed by The Algorithm.
Dear #TwitterMigration folks, an important tip on #privacy on the fediverse:
There is none.
This is a public medium; please treat it as such. Just as you have no privacy on Twitter (Elon Musk can read all your DMs), you have no privacy on the instance you’re on (your administrators can read all your posts).
You can set the visibility of a post but that’s a viewing suggestion, not a privacy guarantee.
Think of your posts as postcards, not sealed letters, and you should be fine.
