Good piece on why scientists are using the word 'scary' to describe our climate futures. It points out that extreme weather events are set to become even more extreme and prevalent - we are now locked in for big change in the coming years - but will get far harder still if we (rich countries esp) do not draw down CO2e and CH4e at once.

"Covid-19 is a leading cause of death in children and young people ages 0-19 years in the United States"
This is where “let it rip” policies in schools have led us to. How is any of this ok?!
“Immunity debt” & “masks” DID NOT cause this. This was caused by #POTUS failing to follow science & #CDC being politicized. #Walenski failed to inform public accurately. Instead schools been allowed to become infection hotspots then carried home.

Update: I decided to get it locked by trying to insult Trump Jr. If it worked in April and if it worked for my Mom recently, it should work for me now.
Otherwise, I will deactivate it in 24 hours
the fact that "websites are hosted by other computers called servers on the internet and are not a magical thing that exists" is not common knowledge anymore and is something that you have /convince/ people about just shows how bad it has gotten
New user here. Had been considering the change for a while, took the plunge with the rest of the refugees of the #TwitterMigration. Lurked for a few days before posting.
I mostly used the birdsite for learning, #medtwitter was something I think worked rather well.
That said... By comparing with my (admittedly small, but fresh) home feed here at #Mastodon, during these past few days I have come to realize just how much the birdsite's algorithms were keeping me within rather limited boundaries, even if my tastes and interests have always been the same. #Mastodon has been giving me less noise and more content.
I am hopeful that this new experience might expand my cultural horizons through all of your wonderful collective and collaborative input and feedback!
Thank you to the creators and team behind #mastodon and to the maintainers of this server @freemo !
I have seen several posts from people how to run their own instances. I don't know much about this directly but I would guess a basic / advanced knowledge of the GNU / Linux command like is probably up there among the skills needed.
So to this end, I am sharing the link below to my own blog , where I have linked to a series of you tube videos on the Linux BASH interface, there are addition parts of this series which I put together as I was asked about cyber security at the code club I rub, so collected some videos that help build up some pre- requisite skills.
It would be great if we could have series such as this native on peertube, in the meantime we can either use Youtube directly or via a front end e.g invideous

Perhaps we can work on a better list to help people with the skills needed for hosting / running Mastodon instances
Twitter has seemed to be a dumpster fire for a long time, highlighting the worst in how people relate to each other. Will those leaving Twitter for the fediverse stick it out here? Will they bring the worst of Twitter with them?
There are ways to interact here that don't create the same relational trash heap that Twitter often felt like to me. I've had cordial interactions with people across the spectrum here. Looking forward to connecting with new joins and hoping for the best.
Journalists at mainstream media such as Vice, Forbes, and NBC have made their own instance. They can be found at https://journa.host
I keep seeing people say Mastodon is nothing like Twitter. And they’re right.
Mastodon is an echo of the old internet, it’s decentralised, chaotic. What you get depends on your sysadmin. You can’t search, everything has to be shared to you by a human. Networks split apart and rejoin. What you see is your unique connection to it.
Is this good? Maybe. But for me that’s the internet I grew up with. No algorithms, no targeted adverts, just human interaction, and it was glorious.
To Twitter migrants complaining about learning how to use the Fediverse—do you forget what it was like to first join Twitter?
Questions that arose back in 2008:
1. What can I possibly say in 140 characters?
2. What is a hashtag, and why does it even exist?
3. How does anyone find anything?
4. Who do I follow?
5. What's a feed?
Twitter came with a learning curve.
Hello, I write scripts and train presenters in a #Planetarium in #Bristol but I'm originally from #Wales. My interests are #science #scicomm #astronomy #history #mythology and nerdy telly like #DoctorWho & #StarTrek. I love #comics, particularly #superheroes and #DCComics and I talk about #TheBeatles far too much.
This is my 3rd go at an #Introduction post as I've been swapping servers as I settle into Mastodon but I'm gonna stop now, I promise.
@mathlover I remember the Grolier encyclopedia. I think my school had either the 91 or the 92 edition, on CD for Acorn Archimedes. It was about the only CD the school had (we had so few, that it was a caddy-based drive and we had enough caddies to keep the CDs in them.
Didn't use hte multimedia much though, that was more the case with Encarta95, which came with my first windows PC
