Yes! "The Morrison government sat on a Privacy Act review for two years. Now is the time for action. The Medibank, Optus and NDIA mass data breaches demand urgent rights-based change which could be summarised in a five-point plan, including an individual right" https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/nov/17/australian-companies-dont-value-keeping-our-data-safe-because-they-have-little-to-lose-our-laws-need-to-change-that?CMP=share_btn_tw
> The first few years of the acquisition were about putting out the fires, cleaning up spam, hate, etc, getting a good technical infrastructure in place, and we integrated the culture and verve of Tumblr in Automattic really well.
> Now we're more in fun mode. Should we switch the backend to @WordPress? Join the fediverse? Support @matrixdotorg / @bluesky ? We 100% want as much of Tumblr to be open source as possible.
@mwlucas I love how fantastically wrong a lot of it is too. Discord, Slack, and Reddit support user run instances now? And “Mastodon” requires a single centralized server to work???
um...
" to use any of the applications that required access to the internet, like email, you had to plug the Cybiko into the USB port of your computer."

Today, the Senate made it clear that we stand with the American people by voting to move forward with the #RespectForMarriageAct.
This is a HUGE win and we are one step closer to ensuring same-sex and interracial couples have the same rights & freedoms as everyone else!

@anildash and here's the list of answers we posted at the time

With the revitalization of the open web and the fediverse, it’s worth revisiting all of the parts of the social web that we’ve lost, and reflecting on how we might rebuild them in a Mastodon world. https://anildash.com/2016/08/08/the-lost-infrastructure-of-social-media/

There was a M5.4 #earthquake in west #Texas today.
This area didn’t used to have many earthquakes. In 2019 that changed, and since then it’s had quite a few earthquakes, with more than 375 quakes with a magnitude higher than M3.5.
These earthquakes (probably including this one) are likely the result of wastewater injection - pumping fluids in to the ground.
Why am I not surprised by this, especially the fact that Musk hasn't done anything about it despite claiming to have "freed" the bird?
It's almost like relying on AI to make judgement calls about inappropriate content is a terrible idea.

I'm an astronomer currently fighting for regulation and better engineering of satellites (particularly Starlink) so that the night sky isn't ruined for everyone: https://theconversation.com/soon-1-out-of-every-15-points-of-light-in-the-sky-will-be-a-satellite-170427
I also have super cute baby goats!
@PlatinumWarlock Hi! And yeah, I am totally sympathetic to the fact that Starlink is the only viable option in many places (I am also a rural internet user, though fortunately I have other options for internet access - Just a bit further out from the city there is nothing else). I highly encourage you to write a quick email to Starlink as a paying customer and tell them that you care about the night sky! It's absolutely an engineering problem that they can make better if they care enough.
@joehumphrey
Same thinking when I was young to. Our knowledge of the world is more basic and we did not know of the complexity and downright nastiness that the world can exhibit.
That say I try to pick out and see the beauty, the wonderful, the astounding that is everywhere in the world. Sometimes these things are hiding but they are there.
Isn't it kinda weird that #Mastodon gets described as 'left-leaning' because we handle more strickt rules and don't tolerate things like bullying.. It could be me but I perceive this as 'normal'.
I mean you don't call people all kinds of names in a conversation on the street or in the store right? Even if you don't agree🤔
Somehow it feels the (online) standards for treating each other have declined so much over the past few years
Let them talk, we are a loving and happy community!
Streaming video is going to be huge for the Fediverse.
Right now, I know if three video apps in active development:
1. PeerTube
2. Owncast
3. A semi-secret project I'm working on with @reiver that has something to do with primates
