Meet Eugen Rotchko (@Gargron), founder of @Mastodon, who just got a profile in TIME magazine. I encourage you to really read the entire excellent interview, bc not only will you learn more about the ethos behind Mastodon, but you can also hear what it’s like for an intelligent human being to talk about social media.

“Thousands Have Joined Mastodon Since Twitter Changed Hands. Its Founder Has a Vision for Democratizing Social Media.”

Seeing lots of #TwitterMigration today so I wanted to repost this handy tool for finding your twitter crowd in the Fediverse where Mastodon users post fedifinder.glitch.me/

This is one of Seneca’s best ideas. He points out that taxes are not just levied on income. They are just the financial form. There are many forms of taxes in life. You can argue with them, you can go to great—but ultimately futile—lengths to evade them, or you can simply pay them and enjoy the fruits of what you get to keep.

He writes, “Nothing will ever befall me that I will receive with gloom or a bad disposition.” Then he says,

“I will pay my taxes gladly. Now, all the things which cause complaint or dread are like the taxes of life—things from which, my dear Lucilius, you should never hope for exemption or seek escape.”
Annoying people are a tax on being outside your house. Delays are a tax on travel. Haters are a tax on having a YouTube channel.

The Stoics had a beautiful phrase: the art of acquiescence. There’s a tax on everything in life. You can whine. Or you can acquiesce—you can pay them gladly. #TheDailyStoic

Why Use Digital Tools in Classrooms?

Complex ideas that are difficult to understand can be illustrated with digital tools. Regression lines are an excellent example. With analog information technology, students must draw “best fit” lines through data sets once they are plotted on graphs (typically paper graphs drawn by students after many minutes of effort). If the graph is drawn with a spreadsheet, however, a regression line can be added to the graph and it changes as data points are plotted. This technology-mediated manipulation of the data helps many students understand the “best fit” nature of regression line more quickly than reflecting on the slow plotting and permanent drawing of the line on a physical graph.

Maybe Twitter's dead, maybe it's not. It doesn't really matter. We've learned that we don't need it to connect with our communities and so, much like the goblin king, it has no power over us.

Great post by Jasmine Lane, in which she explores the roles of tracher, culture & systems in getting good behaviour.

On Twitter, some people are warning that Mastodon server/instance admins can read your DMs. As if this would somehow be worse than Musk and Zuckerberg reading your messages.

More importantly: if Twitter & Facebook have taught us anything, it's that you shouldn't use a *public* social media platform for exchanging *private* messages.

That's what Signal is for.
