Thanksgiving 🍂

Wrap gratitude around you like a cloak and it will feed every corner of your life.

@KarenWyld @indigenousauthors @bookstodon thank you for starting the #IndigenousAuthors group - I am on the West Coast of Canada in Liǧʷiɫdax̌ʷ territory also known as Campbell River. A beautiful book 'Na̱mwa̱yut - A Pathway to Reconciliation by Kwi̱nkwi̱nwa̱ligedzi Wakas Chief Robert Joseph. The publishing industry in Canada is finally making a way for Indigenous authors - it was not always so, just 40 years ago.

Twitter 2021 data breach

If you wanna park your twitter account, please make sure to remove any personal information if possible, including phone number, email, any geolocation data, any photos.

Remember that most of the microservices are suspended recently, who knows if they are still stripping EXIF data, so please do NOT upload any photos, since that could reveal geolocation.

American propaganda about our history is something else. @HC_Richardson@twitter.com spells out the origins of Thanksgiving.

It’s wasn’t really about pilgrims and Indians. It was a morale booster during the Civil War. And it wasn’t a thing until then.

The back end doesn't seem terribly complex ; looks like i can do some basic blocking.

I foresee a quick evolving future of admin-level potential block lists, architecture type stuff. My next step is to learn a little more about folks developing the software - pretty certain there's lots to learn there. Probaby stuff like the great systemd vs. init debate in the Linux community a decade ago!

I suspect there are a lot of smart Masto's who are busy figuring this stuff out!

@beyondwatts @mguhlin

That's funny - I just wrote my last toot about exactly that and then saw your post.

I supect it will evolve rapidly.

Masto-block lists which admins can choose to pick from. The distributed nature of this makes me think there will be menus of options and tastes.

This is fun stuff!

Doing a bit of an experiment. Boost if you agree!

Science is real.

Kindness is everything.

Mastodon is kinda like stumbling into a shelter after a major natural disaster destroyed your town and running into people from your neighbourhood, isn’t it?
Hey! It’s you! You’re here!! You made it!!

I must say, that alas was with a smile. I am grateful to have food to eat, period. I mean to highlight the fiction of thanksgiving celebrations, the more important truths of family and life in spite of real life horrors visited upon those who preceded us, whose history I was ignorant of before.

Alas, this year, I am eating a traditional meal. But I thought I would share my previous reflection as I read for a bit of turkey, ham, and dressing. May you find family and culture at the heart of your celebrations this year in spite of history and truths of life.

A Different Thanksgiving: Indigenous Recipes? After reading indigenous histories, I'm not into celebrating the first Thanksgiving. I know that event was mostly fictional. Thanksgiving is mostly about celebrating family, not the fictional account of Pilgrims and Squanto.

As a pre-Thanksgiving treat to myself, I am writing emails to other academics whose work I read and enjoyed!

Here's my template:
Dear Dr XX
I recently had the chance to read YYY and wanted to write to tell you how much I enjoyed it. I particularly enjoyed <fill in details> and am citing it in <project>. Thanks for producing such good work.

Cheers,
Mirya

New to Mastodon, obviously, and looking for my community!

@mguhlin @bookstodon I am a Stephen King fan, not that I necessarily love horror (a lot of his are more in the strange category) but my all time favorite is Pet Sematary with Michael C. Hall (Dexter) as narrator. His reading and performance of that book highlighted the absolute masterful writing.

Today is a day for observing other teachers teach. I love watching, trying to anticipate what deliberate decisions they will make, how they will take answers, how they will respond to the students’ ideas. I feel that it’s a privilege to be able to see! #EduTooter #EduToot #Teaching #Teachers #TeachingAndLearning
